Cobras, Bobcats remain unbeaten

Last week this column recognized the accomplishments of fourundefeated high school football teams from this area.
Oops and ouch!
That Fantastic Foursome was cut in half Friday night. FranklinCounty lost a close 13-7 encounter to Tylertown and McComb ParklaneAcademy was blown out of the water 49-0 by Jackson Prep.
Bogue Chitto and Wesson remained among the unbeaten ranks andclimbed to 5-0. The Bobcats overpowered an old nemesis in winningbig at Natchez Cathedral, 44-14. Meanwhile, Wesson’s Cobrassurvived a serious upset bid by Enterprise before prevailing38-31.
As the season marches towards November, more unbeaten teams areexpected to fall by the wayside. Bogue Chitto is home tomorrownight, hosting a strong squad from Stringer. Wesson goes on theroad to challenge defending Division 6-2A champion St.Andrew’s.
To win on the road, you must be lucky and good.
Around the Magnolia State, all eyes are on Batesville where theSouth Panola Tigers have roared to an amazing 80 straightvictories. South Panola is seeking another Class 5A statechampionship.
Oak Grove (5-0) could challenge South Panola in early Decemberbut there are plenty of pitfalls along the way. In Class 4A, WayneCounty looks like the cream of the crop. Noxubee County and WestPoint could contend for the 4A crown, too.
In Class 3A, defending champion Louisville’s only loss has beento Wayne County. Newton County, Velma Jackson, Aberdeen and Corinthalso are 5-0. Franklin County should be a contender if the Bulldogsget all their stars healthy.
In Class 2A, Taylorsville is the favorite. Forest andHollandale-Simmons also are 5-0.
In Class 1A, Puckett at 4-0 looks like a favorite. East Webster,Ray Brooks, Durant and Greenville St. Joe are among the unbeaten,too.
On the junior college level, only Jones County (5-0) remainsunbeaten. The Co-Lin Wolfpack handed Coahoma its first loss lastweek, winning 17-7 at Wesson. Co-Lin end Nick Fairley was named theMACJC’s defensive player of the week after making 12 solo tackles,2 assists and breaking up 2 passes.
On the senior college level, Millsaps is the only unbeaten teamleft in Mississippi. The Majors are under the direction of formerAlabama coach Mike Dubose.
Meanwhile, Professor Hoopla B.S. has lost his share of games buthe’s also won a lot, too. Last week he posted a 19-5-0worksheet.
Hoopla was on his way to his favorite deer stand when he droppedoff his camouflage list of predictions for this weekend. He’llstart with a Thursday night special and then share Friday night’shigh school menu.
Delta State at Valdosta State: Statesmen have another strongteam but the hosts are stronger. Valdosta 28-20.
Lawrence County at Brookhaven: In an offensive extravaganza, theCougars outscore the Panthers on King Field. Lawrence County42-32.
Riverfield (La.) at Brookhaven Academy: It’s homecoming and theCougars please the alumni with a convincing win. Brookhaven Academy26-9.
Stringer at Bogue Chitto: It looks like a track meet on thegridiron. Bogue Chitto 36-30.
Enterprise at Madison St. Joe: Fighting Yellow Jackets are readyto win their first-ever Division 6-2A football game. Enterprise27-14.
West Lincoln at Dexter: Bulldogs showed some signs of life whenthey knocked off Salem last week. Dexter 24-21.
Wesson at St. Andrew’s: Saints will have a narrow edge in thisDivision 6-2A showdown. St. Andy’s 20-13.
Franklin County at Jefferson County: Ailing Bulldogs will need alittle bit of luck to escape Fayette with a victory. FranklinCounty 22-21.
In other area games, Copiah Academy should whip PrentissChristian School 30-16, Hazlehurst should ambush Collins 23-18,McComb should maul North Pike 42-22, Parklane should smash ACCS37-10, South Pike should swamp Amite County 39-12 and CrystalSprings should ambush Magee 13-12.
After sipping a Sunkist Diet, Hoopla considers Saturday’scollegiate scene.
Gulf Coast at Co-Lin: Homecoming brings out the best in theWolfpack but it won’t be enough in Stone Stadium. Gulf Coast21-10.
Hinds at Southwest: It’s homecoming in Summit and Eaglequarterback Wesley Mounger is a difficult dude to catch. Hinds28-14.
South Carolina at Ole Miss: Still riding an emotional high fromtheir upset victory at Florida, the Rebels gain more believers witha second straight SEC win. Ole Miss 27-20.
Texas-El Paso at Southern Miss: Following a restive open date,the Golden Eagles are ready to soar again. Southern Miss 34-19.
