Enterprise hosts Sting Bowl

It’s time for the Sting Bowl! The Loyd Star Hornets invade HarryL. Cole Field Friday night for a key Region 6-2A matchup with thehost Enterprise Yellow Jackets. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

In other Lincoln County games, Brookhaven travels to ForestHill, Bogue Chitto invades Puckett and West Lincoln is atSalem.

Enterprise (1-5, 0-2) returns home for its big division matchwith Lincoln County rival Loyd Star (1-4, 0-2).

The Yellow Jackets, under first-year head coach Wayne Rogers,suffered a heart-breaking 20-19 division loss at Madison St. Joelast week.

“Enterprise versus Loyd Star is a big game,” said Rogers. “Werefer to it as the Sting Bowl. It ought to be a good ball game.People need to get there early. We need to get in the win column.We need to get that first district win. This would be a good one toopen up with.”

Rogers was Loyd Star’s principal for four years before moving toEnterprise.

“I hope we bring it,” added Rogers. “We work with the kidsduring the week but Friday night, it’s up to the kids. The kids aregetting better each week. Now we have to win these close ballgames.”

Loyd Star had an open date last week. Two weeks ago, the Hornetsfell the Hinds AHS War Dawgs 37-35.

In the loss to Hinds AHS, Tradareous Wilson led the Loyd Starrunning game with 12 rushes for 117 yards. Marquis Hayes carried 15times for 50 yards and returned a kickoff for an 85-yardtouchdown.

Hornet quarterback Joseph Shelby completed 6 of 13 passes for 94yards and was intercepted twice.

On defense, Andrew Rushing directed Loyd Star with 17 tackles.David Fields followed with 12 stops.

“Enterprise is much improved,” said Loyd Star coach Ryan Ross.”Their kids are playing hard. I am impressed with what I see. Theyall are playing well together. They are fighting hard. People arehaving to earn everything they get against them.”

Ross said his Hornets have been working hard during the opendate.

“Last week, we worked on us,” explained Ross. “We focused oncorrecting some things we needed to correct. We addressed somethings that have cost us ball games.”

In the loss to St. Joe, Enterprise was led by quarterback CodyBrister with 18 rushes for 77 yards. Deon Pendleton carried 14times for 64 yards. Following with 22 yards on 5 carries was ThomasAllen.

Brister completed 3 of 4 passes for 28 yards, including an18-yard pass to Ryan Kennedy.

Defensively, the Jackets got 12 tackles from Travis Leggett.Making 10 stops and blocking a punt was Jarrett Todd.

” It’s two pretty evenly matched teams,” added Ross. “Whoevermake the least mistakes and wants it the most will win it.”

Last year, Loyd Star nipped Enterprise 21-12.

Bogue Chitto (5-1, 5-1) watched its winning streak come to anend last week in a big 42-12 Region 4-1A home loss to Stringer.

Bogue Chitto travels to Puckett (5-0, 5-0) for its biggest gameof the season. Last week, Puckett destroyed Vicksburg St. Aloysius35-7.

The Bobcats, coached by Gareth Sartin, are second in thedivision standings.

“Puckett is one of the top teams in our region,” said Sartin.”They are going to content for a state title again. Their runningback Jeremy Palmer is extremely fast and very explosive. Once heturns the corner, he can score from anywhere.”

” We have to try to control the clock and our turnovers,” addedSartin. “We have to get a few breaks.”

In the loss to Stringer, Bogue Chitto quarterback Seth Avantsdirected the offense, completing 7 of 21 passes for 79 yards andtwo interceptions. Making 5 catches for 64 yards was BrianRobinson.

On the ground, Avants carried the football 12 times for 62yards. Byron Kersee carried 7 times for 39 yards. Finishing with 40yards on 5 carries was Robinson.

The Bobcat defense was led by Colton McClendon with 10 tackles.Making 8 stops was Fred Tillman. Kevin Brothern and Robinsonfollowed with 7 tackles apiece.

Last season, Puckett shut out Bogue Chitto 35-0.

West Lincoln (0-6, 0-5) travels to Salem (1-5, 0-5) for anotherRegion 4-1A test. Last week, West Lincoln fell to Dexter 36-26.

The Bears are under the direction of first-year head coach ChrisCalcote.

“We have a good chance against Salem this week,” said Calcote.”Salem won their first game last week. They know what it is like tobe in the win column. We look for a good effort.”

Last Friday, Salem posted its first win with a 33-0 victory overMt. Herman, La.

In the loss to Dexter, Calvin Kees led West Lincoln with 20carries for 85 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Cardell Porter rushed14 times for 92 yards and scored 2 TDs.

Defensively, Curtis Phillips had 12 tackles for the Bears. JamieRushing made 10 tackles. Matt Magee followed with 9. Nathan Pruskiintercepted a pass.

In last year’s game, West Lincoln fell to Salem 56-14.
