Brookhaven police and Brookhaven School District officials arelooking into possible break-ins in the parking lot across fromBrookhaven High School Wednesday afternoon.
District Superintendent Lea Barrett said a school counselor hadseen someone in the parking lot across from BHS on MonticelloStreet.
“We don’t know yet if anything was actually broken into,”Barrett said Thursday. “We don’t have any immediate reports ofanything being stolen yesterday.”
Barrett said police were called, and that as they arrived, thesubjects fled the parking lot.
Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said the situation isunder investigation, but at this point in the probe, it waspotentially as small an incident as two cars.
“To my knowledge right now, it wasn’t but two cars that wereleft open,” he said.
Barrett said the school’s security officer walked through theparking lot following the incident and noticed a lot of vehiclesleft unlocked with personal items inside.
“There were certainly a lot of opportunities for things to bestolen, but luckily those things were not taken,” she said.
Barrett said students are being urged to report anything theynotice missing to school or police officials. She said in additionto BPD, the school district is investigating the incident aswell.
“We have sent an e-mail out to make sure everyone locks theircars, and we haven’t got the full reports yet,” she said.
The high school is not a stranger to car burglaries, Barrettsaid, but it is not a common occurrence.
“We traditionally have about one incident a year, usually duringnighttime parking,” she said. “Last year we had one report ofsomeone being seen near the cars and something being taken duringpractice for the homecoming production. This is a fairly lowincident issue.”
