BA wins district

NATCHEZ – Brookhaven Academy had little resistance with theAdams County Christian School Rebels Friday night as the Cougarsrolled to a 41-18 non-district win. Brookhaven Academy coachHerbert Davis Jr. was able to substitute his younger players earlyin the second half as Brookhaven raced to a 34-6 halftime lead. TheCougars improved to 7-3 on the year as Adams Christian dropped to1-9.

On this night, however, the most important thing for Brookhavenwas Columbia Academy’s 35-14 win over Copiah Academy. Brookhaven,Copiah, and Simpson were in a three-way tie for first place in thedistrict prior to Friday, but the Columbia win over Copiah gaveBrookhaven the District 4-AA championship. It is the thirdconsecutive district title for Brookhaven.

“Our first goal this year was to win the district,” said CoachDavis. “We have accomplished that and now we are focusing on theplayoffs. We have to be willing to work harder and do what it takesto win against good teams to achieve our other goals.”

Brookhaven received the opening kickoff and took just four playsto march 57 yards as Chandler Rogers found Scottie Peavey from 44yards out with 9:29 left in the first quarter. Nathaniel Sbravatiadded the extra point for a 7-0 Brookhaven lead.

Adams Christian got its only score of the first half on theensuing kickoff as Brice Murray took the kick and raced 85 yards upthe sideline for the touchdown. The extra point attempt failed,closing the Cougar lead to 7-6.

Brookhaven responded on its next drive, as Rogers found Peaveyagain, this time from 38 yards out with 6:07 left in the quarter.Sbravati added the extra point for a 14-6 Brookhaven lead.

Brookhaven added its final score of the first quarter with 1:07left on a 2 yard run by Kolby Byrd. Sbravati again added the extrapoint for a 21-6 lead.

The Cougars picked up in the second quarter where they left offin the first as Rogers scored on a 4-yard run with 7:58 left in thefirst half. Sbravati added a 7-yard run with 1:55 left. After theextra point, Brookhaven held a 34-6 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Adams got their first offensivetouchdown with 11:05 left in the game. Brandon Sanders scored on a22 yard run. The extra point attempt failed, closing the Brookhavenlead to 34-12.

ACCS scored again with 7:13 left as Ryan Comer ran it in from 5yards out. The two-point conversion attempt failed, closing theBrookhaven lead to 34-18.

The Cougars added an insurance score with 5:33 remaining asRogers found Kolby Byrd from 14 yards out. Sbravati added the extrapoint, ending the scoring at 41-18.

“We did some things well tonight and we didn’t so some things sowell.” added Davis. “We were able to jump out early and get ouryounger guys some playing time and that’s going to help us as wemove on to the playoffs.”

Rogers led the Brookhaven offense, completing 11 of his 18 passattempts for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He was interceptedonce. He also ran for another touchdown.

Sbravati led the Brookhaven rushing game, picking up 39 yards on9 carries with a touchdown. Byrd picked up 51 all-purpose yardswith two touchdowns. Peavey was the leading receiver with 4 catchesfor 106 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Dorman caught 4 passes for104 yards.

Sanders led Adams with 73 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.Rusty Blackwell followed with 6 carries for 30 yards.

On defense, Byrd led Brookhaven with 14 tackles. Austin Barnettfollowed with 11 stops. Nathaniel Sbravati was able to record 10tackles.

Brookhaven travels to Yazoo City Friday night to face ManchesterAcademy in a non-district match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
