Co-Lin captures openers

NEW ORLEANS – Guards Rob Wallace and Trent Hutchin shot thelights out Saturday, directing the Co-Lin Wolves to aseason-opening 84-61 win against the Delgado Community CollegeDolphins. Wallace, playing in his hometown, poured in 36 points.Hutchin followed with 24.

In the women’s game, freshman Rachel Vigers scored 14 pointswhile Rhonda Dumas and Latoria Holder netted 10 apiece in Co-Lin’s69-48 win over Delgado.

Co-Lin travels to Mississippi Delta at Moorhead Monday for 2 games,starting with the women at 6 p.m.

The Wolves (1-0) took a 45-36 halftime lead on the strength of alate surge, highlighted by Hutchin’s 42-foot trey as the buzzersounded.

“The last minute and a half of the first half was big for us whenwe were tied,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “Then we scored9 straight points.

“Rob Wallace played really well offensively for us and TrentHutchin shot the ball well,” Sims added. “Wallace drove inside anddrew a lot of fouls.

“We played much better defensively the second half.”

Co-Lin guard Torrian Sanders dished out 6 assists.

Ricardo Porter’s 21 points paced the Dolphins.

“It was a good first win on the road,” said Co-Lin women’s coachGwyn Young. “Delgado is a much better team than last year. Theyalready had played three games.”

“We played really good the first 12 minutes of the game,” Youngnoted. “We played hard and had good, balanced scoring.”

Sophomore center Yashunda Williams led Co-Lin’s rebounding effortwith 9 boards before fouling out.

Co-Lin sophomore guard TeAirraWilbert made 4 assists and Vigers3.

Janecia Luckett’s 14 points paced Delgado.
