Late shooting leaves 1 dead, others injured

MONTICELLO – A Lawrence County man is dead and at least twoothers are hospitalized in Jackson after a late-night incident onRose Hill Road in Monticello, authorities said.

Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said Richard BernardBarnes, 25, of James Cox Road in Monticello, was killed Saturdayaround 12:30 a.m. Fortenberry said Barnes was pronounced dead onthe scene at 45 Rose Hill Road after being shot multiple times withan unknown weapon.

“He was transported to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for anautopsy, which was done today,” Fortenberry said later Saturday.”All we have at this time is a preliminary report that he had fourgunshot wounds, caliber undetermined.”

Two of those, Fortenberry said, were fatal wounds to the chest.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ray Smith saidinvestigators are still interviewing witnesses and have workedsleeplessly since the shooting.

“Right now we’re still actively working on the case, and we’ve allbeen up all night,” he said Saturday afternoon. “I can’t even tellyou exactly what caused the incident.”

At least two other people were transported by ambulance to LawrenceCounty Hospital, and airlifted to the University of MississippiMedical Center. Authorities have not yet released the names of theothers injured, nor what led to the shootings.

Smith said more information would be released in a formal statementfrom the sheriff’s department in coming days, but that there ismore investigation to be done before some details are madepublic.

No arrests have been made in relation to the incident yet.

Fortenberry said Barnes’ funeral arrangements are being handled byLaird Funeral Home in Prentiss. Arrangements are incomplete.
