Six held in shootout questioning

MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department said sixpeople are being detained for questioning in a late-night shootoutthat left a Monticello man dead and his brother in fair conditionat University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Lawrence County Coroner Sidney Fortenberry said Saturday thatRichard Bernard Barnes, 25, of James Cox Road in Monticello, waskilled Saturday around 12:30 a.m. Fortenberry said Barnes waspronounced dead on the scene at 45 Rose Hill Road after being shotmultiple times with an unknown weapon.

His brother, Ricardo Barnes, 19, was one of three otherstransported from the scene to Lawrence County Hospital with gunshotwounds. Ricardo Barnes was later airlifted to UMC.

Lawrence County Hospital officials said the other two injured,Christopher Lewis, 20, and Murphy Peyton, 19, were treated andreleased.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Ray Smith said thereason for the shootings is still under investigation. The names ofthose detained for questioning are not being released.

“When we make an official arrest, we’ll release that information,”Smith said.

Smith said the incident occurred in the road near a place on RoseHill Road where people often meet to socialize on the weekends.

Richard Barnes’ body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Labfor an autopsy, which showed that he was shot four times.Fortenberry said two of the gunshot wounds were lethal shots to thechest, but the type of weapon is still undetermined.

“We haven’t gotten the caliber of the gun that killed Mr. Barnesfrom the crime lab yet,” Smith said. “We’re unable to releaseanything concrete on that now.”

Smith said the victims also are still being questioned. He said asthe investigation unfolds, more information will be madepublic.

“Once we get more information, we’ll release more,” he said. “Butright now until we can get everything together that’s all we cansay.”
