BA girls bag victory

Brookhaven Academy’s varsity basketball squads entertained theMadison-Ridgeland Academy Patriots Tuesday night in the home openerfor both teams and the season opener for the varsity boys in JohnR. Gray Gymnasium.

Freshman guard Terah Winborne scored a team-high 14 points,collected 9 steals and dished out three assists to lead Brookhavento a 46-39 victory. It was the first win of the season for theyouthful Lady Cougars as they improved to 1-2.

In varsity boys action, junior forward Jamison Powell scored ateam-high 17 points, collected 10 rebounds and 5 steals but theCougars fell to MRA 67-52.

The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 9-6 lead after the firstquarter and had to hold off a valiant comeback from the Lady Patsin the second half as MRA battled back to take a one-point lead at22-21 in the third quarter. The Lady Cougars overcame a poorperformance at the free-throw line to secure their first win of theseason.

BA center Anna Katelyn Mangold added 12 points in support ofWinborne. Marion Allen scored 7 points. Laura Beth Wright pulleddown 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars.

Haley Jones scored a game high 17 points to lead MRA. MRA 67Brookhaven 52

MRA jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back asBrookhaven was never able to get any closer than 4 points the restof the game.

The Patriots got a game-high 31 points from Jordan Stentiford.Caleb Miskelly followed with 9 points. They made 19 of 30 freethrows compared to BA’s 5 of 12.

BA’s Blaine Roberts scored 11 points and dished out 4 assists insupport of Powell. Josh Winborne scored 10 points. Jake Reed pulleddown 7 rebounds for Coach Dale Watts.

Brookhaven travels to face Central Hinds Thursday night for afour-game set. Tipoff in the first game is set for 4 p.m.
