More charges filed in shooting incident

MONTICELLO – Another suspect is being charged with murder andthree counts of aggravated assault in a late-night shooting thattook place a little over a week ago in rural Lawrence County.

Lawrence County Undersheriff Willie Wallace said Kabaska Polk,31, of Prentiss, was originally charged as an accessory to murderafter the fact. He is now charged, along with four others, withmurder and three counts of aggravated assault in the deadly ambushshooting that left Richard Bernard Barnes dead and three othershospitalized.

Wallace said Polk’s charges were upgraded as a result of furtherinterviews with witnesses.

“We’ve just had more people come forward and tie him in with theshooting,” Wallace said.

Joel Davis, 36, of 509 Jones St., New Hebron, was upgraded tocharges of murder and three counts of aggravated assault fromaccessory after the fact charges last week, and Jason Davis, 34, of491 Garrett Road, Silver Creek, is now charged with possession of afirearm by a convicted felon in addition to his previous charges ofmurder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Also initially charged with murder were Leon Hayes, 34, of 170065th St., Apt. M96, Gulfport; and Bryant Cauthen, 23, of 28763Highway 51, Como. Derrick Jackson, 20, of 342 West Progress Road,Prentiss; and April Garner, 19, of 500 Garrett Road, Silver Creek,were also charged with accessory to the crime after the fact.

Wallace said Lawrence County officials will continue tointerview witnesses and other possible suspects. He said theincident occurred in an area where there were so many witnessesthat people are still filling in the blanks for investigators.

“There were a lot of people around when it happened,” he said.”The investigation is still ongoing, and we’ve still got people totalk to.”

Wallace said Monday morning that there could still be furtherarrests in the incident.
