Carl D. Holloway

We celebrate the life and home going of Carl Dewitt Holloway, whodeparted this life to rejoice in his eternal home on Tuesday, Nov.18, 2008.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Bethel A.M.E. Church inBrookhaven with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brookhaven.

Visitation is Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at R.E. TylerFuneral Home.

Carl D. Holloway was the second child of Ellihue and Emmaline TylerHolloway born Oct. 18, 1935. He grew up in Lincoln County and was a1953 graduate of Alexander High School. He attended Alcorn A&MCollege, but dropped out to join the U.S. Army in 1954. After threeyears in the Army, he re-entered Alcorn and pledged the Eta Chapterof Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He graduated cum laude andreceived his B.S. degree in 1960 in Health and Physical Educationand General Science. He received a M.S. degree from Jackson StateUniversity in 1975 and Educational Specialist degree from JacksonState University in 1977.

On March 2, 1957, he was united in Holy Matrimony to JohnetteTillman. To this union, two sons Carl Dexter and Charles wereborn.

Carl started his educational career as a science teacher andfootball and track coach at Temple High School in Vicksburg. In1962, he became a teacher/coach at Alexander High School. In 1968,he left teaching to become a federal employee with the Departmentof Labor and worked in Natchez and Biloxi. In 1973, he came back tothe Brookhaven School System as the attendance officer and laterbecame the Deputy Superintendent. He retired from his educationalcareer in 1998.

Believing in making a difference in Brookhaven, he ran a successfulcampaign as Alderman of Ward Three for the City of Brookhaven in1984. He served as the President of the Board of Trustees for theBrookhaven School District.

He has received many citations, resolutions, awards, and honors formeritorious service. In 2008, he was inducted into the AlexanderHigh School Legacy Hall of Honor and a classroom was named in hishonor at the Lincoln County Boys and Girls Club.

Carl was a basketball and football official for the MississippiHigh School Activities Association. He was a life member of theAlcorn State University National Alumni Association. He was amember of the ASU “A” Club, Phi Delta Kappa International,Mississippi School Board Association, Southern Association ofColleges and Schools Accreditation Team and many other professionaland community organizations. He was a Trustee of Bethel A.M.E.Church. He spent a lot of his time on the golf course.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, OsborneHolloway.

He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Johnette; twosons, Dexter and daughter-in-law Nikki, of Brookhaven, and Charles,of Lexington, Ky.; two grandsons, Carl Dorian and Miles TillmanHolloway, of Brookhaven; three sisters, Annette Holloway Graham, ofEnglewood, N.J., Emma Jean Holloway Patton, of Staten Island, N.Y.,and Joyce Holloway (Daniel) McGee, of McComb; one aunt, AnnieGaston, of Ellicott City, Md.; three goddaughters, Bertheria andFelicia Gaston, of Ellicott City, and Representative Alice GriffinClark, of Jackson; three grand-godchildren, Marvin (Rosalynn) KingJr. of Lexington, Ky., Chris King, of Dallas, Texas, and Tony(Sundi) King, of Baton Rouge, La.; five sister-in-laws, CatherineHolloway, of Las Vegas, Nev., Augustine Buie, of Duluth, Ga., AnniePearl Kelly of Swedesboro, N.J., and Doris Tillman, of Chicago,Ill.; three brother-in-laws, Homer (Arnetta) Tillman and CharlesTillman, of Jackson, and James (Esther) Tillman, of Brookhaven; adevoted cousin, Jeanette Scott, of Brookhaven; and a host ofnieces, nephews, family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel A.M.E. Churchbuilding fund.

Rhonda S. Thomas Murray

Services for Rhonda S. Thomas Murray, of Wesson, are 11 a.m.Thursday, Nov. 20, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service Chapel withburial in Sweetwater Methodist Church Cemetery in Wesson.

Visitation is Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeralhome.

Mrs. Murray, 41, died Nov. 17, 2008, at her residence. She was bornon Dec. 9, 1966, to John Butler Smith Jr. and Linda Sue Smith.

She was a president of Rebel Testers Inc. She was a member ofSweetwater Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her maternal grandfather, Denver E.Smith; her paternal grandparents, John Butler Smith and WessieKatherine Smith.

Survivors are her parents; her husband, Pat Murray; her daughters,Anna Scott Thomas and Abby Lin Thomas and their father, TreyThomas; a stepdaughter, Taylor Murray; a sister, Deanna Edwards andhusband, Pittman Edwards Jr.; and a grandmother, Wisla Smith.

David Earl Robinson

Services for David Earl Robinson, of Brookhaven, are 2 p.m. Friday,Nov. 21, at St. Paul M.B. Church with burial in New Hope M.B.Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Thursday from 1 until 7 p.m. with family present from6 until 7 p.m. at Williams Mortuary.

Mr. Robinson, 62, died Nov. 16, 2008, at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter in Brookhaven. He was born in Lincoln County on Dec. 18,1945, to Milton “Cooter” Robinson and Priscilla PattonRobinson.

He was a 1965 graduate of Alexander High School. He was retired. Hewas a member of New Hope M.B. Church, where he served on the deaconboard.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Gussie MaeWhite; his brothers, L.C. Robinson, Willie James Robinson andJessie Robinson.

Survivors are his wife, Shirley A. Robinson, of Brookhaven; adaughter, Shawn’ee M. Robinson, of Brookhaven; his sons, LaurelRobinson and Clint Robinson, both of Brookhaven; his sisters, LelaMae Blissett and Daisy L. Robinson, both of Brookhaven; a brother,Odell Robinson, of Milwaukee, Wis.; his two grandchildren,Shunzetta Wilson and Coderro McDaniel, both of Brookhaven; and histwo great-grandchildren, William Douglas Ard and DeSean TavaresArd, both of Brookhaven.
