Baby death ruled homicide

The death of the child injured in an attempted drowning incidentin April has been classified as a homicide, Deputy Lincoln CountyCoroner Robert Tyler said.

Seven-month-old A’Keira Mikiyah Hooks was injured during adomestic dispute between her parents when her father, CurtneyGayten, 26, of Bogue Chitto took her to a private pond near hermother’s home and attempted to drown her. Gayten was killed by aLincoln County Sheriff’s deputy after threatening the officer witha gun.

“She (Hooks) was injured in that incident and she died sevenmonths later, so it was considered a homicide,” he said.

Hooks was resuscitated at the scene by other sheriff’s deputiesand taken to KDMC. From there, she was transported to University ofMississippi Medical Center, where she spent several weeks inintensive care.

Hooks was released into hospice care, officials said. She waspronounced dead at KDMC Friday morning.
