After battling failing health for quite some time, former WardSix Alderman Buddy Allen died Sunday in Ridgeland.

Allen, 68, passed away in his room Sunday morning at HospiceMinistries in Ridgeland.

Allen took office in a special election in July of 1995, andstepped down during his third term as Ward Six’s representative onthe board. In early March, he submitted a letter to the boardciting health reasons for his resignation, which became official onApril 15.

Current Ward Six Alderman David Phillips said Allen had left himwith big shoes to fill.

“It’s certainly been an honor for me to follow Buddy,” he said.”As I work the ward, I’ve had great comments about his 13 years inservice. He certainly will be missed.”

Mayor Bob Massengill said one of the things he remembers aboutAllen was a comment he made when Massengill first joined the boardas an alderman.

“Buddy told me when I first became an alderman that he wanted tobe known as a man who always did his best to do what he thought wasright,” Massengill said.

Allen was known for his outspoken, laid-back candor inmeetings.

In his resignation letter to the board, he reminded them toremember that “poor people have rights too.” Phillips said that wasone thing Allen passed on when the ward changed hands.

“I remember one of his comments was to help the people, poor orrich,” he said. “No matter what people’s status is, always be readyto help on anything they need.”

Phillips said Allen gave him one other valuable gem of advice aswell.

“To absolutely respond to everyone that calls, and don’t leaveany call unanswered whether you can help or not,” he said. “Hereminded me to be concerned with the citizens, and that was greatadvice.”

Meanwhile, city officials offered condolences to Allen’s family,especially his wife, Diane.

“Buddy Allen served the city well for many years, and the entirecity will miss him,” Massengill said. “Our heartfelt prayers go outto Diane and the family.

Phillips agreed.

“I’d certainly like to tell Diane and the family that we’ll bekeeping them in our hearts and in our prayers,” he said.

Allen’s services will be held at Riverwood Family FuneralService. Visitation is Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeralhome and services are Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
