WESSON – Free throws were what the Co-Lin Wolves needed in thefinal two minutes of play Tuesday night in Mullen Gymnasium.

From the charity stripe, sophomore guard Rob Wallace was 4 of 6,sophomore forward Lewanski Newsome was 2-2, sophomore guard TrentHutchin was 2-2 and sophomore guard Torrian Sanders combined to go9 of 12 and help the Wolves to a big 53-51 win over the MississippiDelta Trojans.

In the women’s game, Mississippi Delta held off a sluggishCo-Lin team down the stretch to escape with a 67-57 victory. It wasthe Lady Wolves’ (6-1) first loss of the season.

Co-Lin returns home Thursday night to host the Coahoma Tigers.The women’s game begins at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8.

Co-Lin 53, Miss. Delta 51

On the night, Co-Lin was 17 of 21 from the free-throw line.Miss. Delta was 4 of 10. The Trojans nailed 7 treys to Co-Lin’s4.

At the half, the teams were deadlocked at 22-all. In the secondhalf, Delta’s Ted Washington nailed 2 treys in the final 32 secondsto keep the Trojans close but Delta couldn’t stop Co-Lin’s solidfree-throw shooting.

“It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but a whole lot better when youwin,” said Co-Lin men’s basketball coach Dennis Sims after the win.”The kids played really hard.”

Powering the Wolves (4-4) with 19 points, including 3 treys, 3rebounds and 7 steals was Wallace. Newsome fired in 15 points andpulled down 5 rebounds. Sanders followed with 9 points, 3 stealsand 3 assists.

Mississippi Delta (4-5) got 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 stealsfrom sophomore forward Trevon Malone (6-6, 200) of Memphis.Washington netted 11 points followed by Falando Jones with 10points and 6 rebounds.

“Offensively, we are still struggling,” added Sims. “We’remissing too many shots. We had mental mistakes.”

Miss. Delta 67, Co-Lin 57

The Lady Wolves came out and led 18-11 at the 14:28 mark whenthe Lady Trojans came back and the game went back and fourth in thefirst half. At halftime, Miss. Delta led Co-Lin 34-32.

“Except for the first couple of minutes, we weren’t in thegame,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach Gwyn Young. “We shot the ballterrible (37%). We didn’t do a good job of attacking theirpress.

“Mississippi Delta played well. They outhustled us.”

In the the second half, the Lady Wolves never took the lead,trailing by as much as 13 points 57-44 with 6:50 left to play.Co-Lin trimmed the deficit to 6 points, 63-57, with 1:37 left butcould not get any closer.

Freshman guard Rachel Vigers powered the Lady Wolves with agame-high 25 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Shareka Hunt, afreshman forward from Meadville, followed with 14 points, 6rebounds and 2 steals.

The 5-4 Lady Trojans were paced by sophomore guard Jessica Ayerswith 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Scoring 14 points eachwere Kimberly Banks and Alesha Banks. Finishing with 12 points and8 rebounds was Brittany Lakes.

“We have to get better,” added Young.

Following the men’s game, Young conducted a late practice withthe Lady Wolves.
