Hornets, Cobras split

The Wesson Lady Cobras won their first Division 6-2A test of theseason Tuesday night with a 49-36 win over the host Loyd Star LadyHornets.

In the varsity boys game, unbeaten Loyd Star put away Wesson88-57, powered by Ashton Fox’s game-high 32 points.

Loyd Star travels to Madison St. Joseph Friday night for 3 games.Wesson hosts Enterprise on Thursday, Dec. 18.

Wesson 49, Loyd Star 36

The Wesson girls (8-3, 1-0) led 11-7 over Loyd Star (8-2, 0-1) inthe first quarter. At halftime, the Lady Cobras were up by 2points, 21-19.

A 15-8 run by Wesson put the Cobras up by 9 points, 36-27, goinginto the final frame. The Lady Cobras outscored the Lady Hornets13-9 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

“We got outplayed tonight,” said Loyd Star girls coach BillyVaughn. “We could not get into our flow of the game. I also gotoutcoached. Wesson was more prepared than us.”

Powering the Wesson girls to the win with a game-high 29 points and5 rebounds was Ann Shelby Davis. Macie Case followed with 8 points,3 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

“I thought we had a total team effort,” said Wesson girls coachHugh Webb. “We pressed and forced turnovers. We got better as thegame went on. I am proud of my girls effort.”

The Lady Hornets were led by Leah Britt with 13 points and 3steals. Shannon Chester finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 4assists. Center Haley Sones was in early foul trouble and fouledout of the game. Sones pulled down 6 rebounds.

Loyd Star 88, Wesson 57

The Loyd Star boys (10-0, 1-0) jumped on Wesson (7-3, 0-1) 21-12 inthe first quarter and pushed its lead to 46-33 at the half. TheHornets put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a 26-5run.

“We played a good game,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene (Moochie)Britt. “Our defense was the factor in the game. We forcedturnovers. We played team ball. We dominated the whole game.

“Wesson has a good team. I’m glad to get our first district win. Weneed to keep improving each and every game.”

Glenn Thomas pumped in 19 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, made 3steals and had 3 assists. Netting 11 points and grabbing 9 reboundswas DeAndre Butler. Fox had 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

“We did not handle their pressure defense,” said Wesson boys coachRon Kessler. “When we managed to trim down the Loyd Star lead inthe first half, we could not find our extra boost we needed tocontinue a comeback. Now we must regroup and get better as theseason goes.”

The Cobras were led by Tyler Lumley with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 3steals and 3 assists. Jeromy Smith fired in 9 points, grabbed 8rebounds and blocked 2 shots.

Junior varsity games

The 8-0 Wesson girls beat Loyd Star 26-11.

Hannah Selman led Wesson with 7 points followed by Summer Rialswith 6 points.

Jordan Williams netted 5 points for Loyd Star. Courtney Watts had 4points.

The Loyd Star boys knocked off Wesson 47-38.

The Hornets got 24 points from Zach Smith. Preston Hebert netted 11points.

Hunter Hood fired in 13 points for Wesson. Gib Britt followed with9 points.
