Robert Lee ‘Monster’ Brown
Services for Robert Lee “Monster” Brown, of Brookhaven, are 2 p.m.Saturday, Dec. 13, at Friendship M.B. Church in Brookhaven withburial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is Friday from 1 until 6 p.m. at Williams Mortuary.
Mr. Brown, 60, died Dec. 6, 2008, at his residence. He was born inAdams County on Oct. 12, 1948, to Lonnie B. “Boot” Brown and LessieRee Brown Dixon.
He was a 1968 graduate of Alexander High School. He was disabled.He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. Mr. Brownreceived several medals for his service including, the NationalDefense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Crossof Gallantry with Palm. He was a member of St. Paul M.B.Church.
Preceding him in death were his father; and his grandparents.
Survivors are his mother, Lessie Ree Dixon, of Brookhaven; a son,Ya’quilla Washington, of Brookhaven; a brother, Renardo Dixon andwife, Usheka, of Baytown, Texas; his sisters, Annie Dixon Phillipsand husband, Eugene, Mary Dixon Washington and Chantay Dixon Evans,all of Brookhaven; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives,friends and his sisters and brothers in Christ.
Nancy Clower Self
At 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, Nancy Clower Self woke up atthe feet of Jesus after a valiant yearlong fight with ovariancancer. She was 71.
She was born and reared in the Hillsboro community in Scott County,the youngest child of Louise Lloyd Clower and John Sim Clower. Sheattended school in Forest and graduated high school at age 16. Shewas a graduate of Mississippi College and enjoyed a successful30-year career as an educator. She taught elementary school in NewOrleans, La., while her husband attended seminary, but the majorityof her teaching years were spent in the state of Mississippi publicschool system. Over the years, she taught youngsters all the wayfrom Biloxi to Batesville and cities in between. She was apassionate teacher, who loved her students and fellow teachers.Many were blessed to have called “Miss Self” their teacher.
In addition to teaching, she and her husband, Robert, workedalongside each other for over 45 years in the ministry of theGospel of Jesus Christ. She tirelessly supported her husband as hepastored churches throughout Mississippi. She was an exemplarypastor’s wife and helpmate.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Edna LouiseClower; and a brother, John Lloyd Clower.
She is survived by the love of her life, Dr. Robert “Bro. Bob” E.Self; her children, Angie Self Russell and husband, Van, RobertTodd Self and wife, Donna, and Jon Mark Self and wife, Heather; her13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.She was especially blessed these last years to have had a specialfriend and caretaker, Terry Hollingsworth.
She counted the many friends and members of Friendship BaptistChurch in Grenada to have also been her “family.”
Visitation is Thursday, Dec. 11 from 5 until 8 p.m. The funeralFriday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. Both will be at Friendship BaptistChurch in Grenada. Interment at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery inEnid.
Memorials may be made to Friendship Baptist Church building fund orOxford Recovery Ministry to provide the “Life Recovery Bible” toaddicts and alcoholics. Either memorial may be sent to FriendshipBaptist Church, 475 Pea Ridge Road, Grenada, MS, 38901, anddesignated as such.
Lucille S. Smith
Services for Lucille S. Smith, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m. Friday,Dec. 12, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service Chapel with burial inPleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith, 81, died Dec. 10, 2008, in Brookhaven. She was born onApril 13, 1927, to Joe B. Smith and Eunice Porter Smith.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church inBrookhaven.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Leon Smith,Marvin Smith, Othell Smith and Dan Smith; and a sister, EvaDavis.
Survivors are her husband of 62 years, Ray C. Smith; a son, MichaelSmith and wife, Kaye; a daughter, Kathy Smith Morris and husband,Ronnie; a sister, Sarah Freeman and husband, Solon; and a host ofgrandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lottie Moon ChristmasOffering at First Baptist Church.
Sybil Virginia Smith

Sybil Virginia Smith passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008. Mrs.Smith, 88, was a native of Brookhaven. She was a member of theFoster Road Baptist Church and the Sarah Adult No. 2 Sunday school.She was also a past matron of Fairfield’s Eastern Star Chapter No.211 in Baton Rouge, La., a member of Central Eastern Star No. 23and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 38. She retiredfrom Blue Cross Blue Shield. Her hobbies were cooking andquilting.
Survivors include her daughters, Betty Smith Starnes and husband,Jimmy, of Baton Rouge, and Glenda Smith Moreno, of Olla, La.; asister, Maxine S. Calcote; her four grandchildren, Ricky W. Gayleand wife, Pam, Steven M. Starnes and wife, Amy, Amy L. White andhusband, Roddy, and Stacy S. Henry and husband, Ross; her sevengreat-grandchildren, Kelli G. Evans, Jasmine White, Christy White,Anna Claire Henry, Stuart M. Starnes, Abigail Virginia Henry andCharles Andrew Starnes; and her three great-great-grandchildren,Triston Evans, Adrianna Evans and Kade Swett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva A. Smith; herparents, George W. and Lavada B. Smith; her two sisters, Annie S.Smith and Pauline S. Rollins; her two brothers, George W. Smith,Jr. and Aubrey L. Smith; and her son-in-law, Clarence Moreno.
The funeral services will be on Thursday, Dec. 11 at noon.Visitation will be at 11 a.m. at Greenoaks Funeral Home Chapel. TheRev. Huey Moak with Foster Road Baptist Church will officiate.Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Pallbearers will be Steve Starnes, Ross Henry, Harry Smith, TracySmith, Jimmy G. Calcote and Jason Smith.
Special thanks to Linda Delaughter and Betty Gail Freeman. The wakewas on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeralhome.
