BA teams advance in Holiday Classic

Brookhaven Academy’s boys and girls breezed into the semifinalsof their Holiday Classic in John R. Gray Gymnasium. The Cougars andLady Cougars disposed of Silliman Institute Saturday night, beatingthe boys 66-32 and the girls 47-20.

Brookhaven Academy will meet Copiah Academy in Monday’ssemifinals, starting at 6:30 with the girls, followed by the boysat 7:45. Marshall plays the Oak Forest girls at 4 p.m. and theMarshall boys play Trinity at 5:25 in the other semifinalsaction.

In Monday’s consolation games, ASC plays the Silliman girls at1:30 and the Silliman boys face ASC at 2:45.

The Lady Cougars (11-4) got 8 points from Tereah Winborne and 7rebounds from Mary Lindsey Magee in the win over Silliman. NicoleSmith and Jordan Langston each had 6 rebounds. Smith chipped in 7steals.

Coach Barry Gray’s team roared to a12-0 first-quarter lead andled 28-4 at halftime.

In Saturday’s earlier tournament action, the Copiah Academygirls beat Amite School Center 59-37, led by Lori Baham’s 13points. Madelon Cline added 11 points and Amanda Pyron nine.

ASC was led by Melanie Reed’s 14 points. Brooklyn Petrick had 12points.

The Cougars (10-3) cruised to a 40-21 halftime lead and CoachDale Watts was able to substitute freely. Offensively, they werepaced by Blaine Roberts and Jake Reed with 16 and 13 pointsrespectively. Josh Winborne chipped in 10 points.

On the backboards, Jamison Powell led the Cougars with 7rebounds. Jeremy Foster had 6 rebounds and Sidney Chaffin 5.

Reed chipped in 5 steals to the victory. Powell and Foster eachhad 4 assists.

In the other girls game, Oak Forest defeated Natchez Trinity49-42 as Cassie Bennett netted 18 points for the LadyYellowjackets. Lauren Brumfield added 11 points.

Trinity was led by Madelyn Cross with 17 points. CarolineKetchings added 12 points.

In boys action, Copiah whipped ASC 42-26, sparked by Ben Boone’s13 points. Caleb Stewart chipped in 10 points.

The ASC Rebels got 11 points from Lucas Felder. Justin Duckchipped in 10 points.

In the other boys game, Trinity beat Oak Forest 60-52, led byGiovanni Dent’s 13 points. Andrew Johnson added 12 points. JacksonBryant and Brandon Daggs each had 11 points.

Oak Forest was paced by Drew Mesita’s 27 points. BaylorBlanchard had 13 points.
