Wesson gains semifinals; BC, Enterprise boys win

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras, the EnterpriseYellow Jackets, the Pelahatchie Lady Chiefs and the Bogue Chitto’CatsBobcats and Lady ‘Cats advanced to the semifinals of theWesson Holiday Basketball Tournament after posting first-round winsSaturday.

The Cobras whipped the Vicksburg St. Aloysius Flashes 79-57, theWesson girls whipped St. Al 76-28, the Enterprise boys clobberedPelahatchie 61-37, the Lady Chiefs rallied past the Lady Hornets58-55 and , the Bogue Chitto girls rolled over Madison St. Joe’sLady Bruins 71-43, the Bobcats took down the Bruins 52-44, theCathedral Green Wave stomped the Pisgah Dragons 54-36 and theEnterprise girls spanked Cathedral 66-19.

In the winner’s bracket Monday night, the Cobras (10-3)entertain Cathedral at 8:30 p.m. The Wesson girls (9-3) faceEnterprise at 7. TThe Enterprise boys (7-7) play at 5:30 againstagainst the winner of the Bogue Chitto (4-8)-Madison St. Josephgame. The Pelahatchie girls meet the Bogue Chitto (11-2) at 4.

In the losers’ bracket, the Loyd Star girls (11-4) play Mondaymorning at 10 a.m. against St. Joe. The Pelahatchie boys face St.Joe at 11:30 a.m. The Cathedral girls face St. Al at 1 and thePisgah boys tangle with St. Al at 2:30.

Wesson 79, St. Al 57

“Cody King had his best offensive game of the year,” said Wessonboys coach Ron Kessler. King, a senior who played point guard lastnight, led the Cobras with 21 points, including 3 treys and 10assists for a double-double.

Teammate Jeromy Smith fired in 15 points, grabbed 10 reboundsand made 5 steals for a double-double. Samuel King netted 12 pointsfollowed by Josh Hood with 11. D.J. Coleman added 8 rebounds.

St. Al got 23 points, including 6 treys from Sean Johnson. AlexLanier finished with 21 points.

Wesson 76, St. Al 28

“Our girls came out ready to play,” said Wesson girls coach HughWebb. “I was pleased with our effort.”

Powering the Lady Cobras with 15 points each were Macie Case andAnn Shelby Davis. Ansley Schimmel followed with 13 points.

St. Al was led by Tori Hines with 8 points.

Enterprise 61, Pelahatchie 37

“We played a very good game of basketball,” said first-yearEnterprise boys coach John Knight following the win. “We got downthe floor quick on them. But we missed too many free throws(14-31).”

Enterprise led Pelahatchie 9-7 at the end of the first quarter.In the second quarter, the Jackets began pulling away from theChiefs with a 19-13 run to take an 8-point, 28-20, lead at thehalf.

Powering the Jackets with 12 points was Kevin Perry. ThomasAllen fired in 10 points.

The Chiefs were led by Darryus Ragsdale with 15 points.

Pelahatchie 58, Loyd Star 55

The Lady Chiefs came back in the fourth quarter for a 21-13 runon the Lady Hornets to pull out a victory in the final seconds.Loyd Star led Pelahatchie by 5 points, 42-37, going into the finalframe.

The Loyd Star girls, coached by Billy Vaughn, dominatedPelahatchie in the first quarter and led 28-20 at the half.

The Lady Chiefs were directed by Allison Boyd with a game-high21 points. Andrea Kersh scored 19 points. Tamisha Bradford 12.

The Lady Hornets were led by Erica Smith with 15 points, 4rebounds and a blocked shot. Pumping in 13 points, grabbing 14rebounds and making 8 assists was Shannon Chester. Haley Sonesnetted 12 points and blocked a shot. Sarah Falvey pulled 5 reboundsand had 4 assists.

Bogue Chitto 71, St. Joe 43

“We started off sloppy,” said Bogue Chitto girls coach ChristiTerrell. “We had a good third quarter. We’re out of shape.”

Bogue Chitto jumped on St. Joe 20-10 in the first quarter andpushed its lead to 31-22 at halftime

Directing the Lady ‘Cats with 21 points apiece were AneshiaDillon and Kelli Howard. Adrienne Hall finished with 8 points andmade 5 steals. Howard pulled down 6 rebounds. Josie Porter made 7steals and had 14 assists.

St. Joe was led by Corbin Divinity with 15 points.

Bogue Chitto 52, St. Joe 44

The Bogue Chitto boys, under first-year head coach Curt Crain,led St. Joe 24-22 at halftime and 39-24 going into the finalframe.

“We played pretty good until the fourth quarter,” said Crain.”In the fourth quarter, their pressure got to us. We made ourclutch free throws at the end.”

Powering the Bobcats with 16 points (including 3 treys), 3steals and 2 blocked shots was Justin London. Fred Tillman netted10 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Following with 7 rebounds wasShane Lewis, followed by Byron Kersey with 6.

St Joe got 18 points from Nick Pernell.
