Bat-wielding man sought in armed robbery Monday

Brookhaven authorities are seeking a masked man who allegedlywielded a baseball bat during the Monday morning armed robbery ofthe B & B Food Mart on East Monticello Street.

Brookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson said a lone black male,around 5’5″ to 5’7″ in height, was wearing black pants, a blackshirt and a ski mask. The man, whom officials said was only wearingone glove, entered the business Monday at 9:20 a.m. with a baseballbat in hand..

“The clerk asked him what he wanted, and he said, ‘everything,'”said Investigator Frank Leggett. “Then he started swinging thebat.”

Leggett said the suspect did not injure anyone, but caused somedamage to merchandise in the store. The may struck the cashregister, causing it to open, and took an undisclosed amount ofcash.

“Then he ran,” Leggett said, adding that the suspect fled southfrom the business.

Officials said they have no suspects in the case, but that theywould appreciate any help the public might be able to offer.

“We’d appreciate any calls we get,” said Assistant Chief NolanJones.
