Patricia A. ‘Trish Ann’ Corkern

Services for Patricia A. “Trish Ann” Corkern, of Wesson, were 2p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonwith burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Miss Corkern, 58, died Dec. 23, 2008, at her son’s residence inLas Vegas, Nev.

She was a devoted wife, mother and caretaker of hermother-in-law.

Preceding her in death were her parents, W.C. and MargaretJennings; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hemphill.

Survivors are her sons, Jason and David Corkern, of Las Vegas;her mother-in-law, Bessie Corkern; and her two granddaughters,Lauren and Ashley Corkern.

Dr. Calvin Cotten Brister

Dr. Calvin Cotten Brister, 73, of Poplar Drive, Morgantown,W.Va., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at hisresidence.

Dr. Brister was born in Brookhaven on Jan. 15, 1935; a son ofthe late Martin Joseph Brister and the late Burdette “Cotten”Brister.

Dr. Brister was a very well known and respected professor ofpharmacy at West Virginia University for 37 years. Even after hebecame semi-retired, he still taught at least 20 hours a week andremained a favorite professor among students at the university.Teaching was his first great love, and his passion for what he didmade a huge impact on his many students throughout the years.

He retired as a professor and assistant dean of the WestVirginia University School of Pharmacy and was in charge ofadmissions and undergraduate student affairs.

He enjoyed being in the outdoors – hiking, cycling on the Railsto Trails and motorcycle riding. He had a large gun collection andalso enjoyed hunting.

Above all, he will be remembered for his contributions to hisstudents and WVU, being a loving husband and father, and awonderful grandfather to his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Voigt Brister; his twodaughters, Dr. Donna Cheryl Brister and Karen Leigh Brister; hisstepchildren, Linda Sutherland and her husband, Bill Pixler,Michael Sutherland and Stephen Sutherland; a granddaughter, RobynBrister; 14 step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren; andhis former spouse, Carolyn Read.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by asister, Martina Brister Vail.

In keeping with Dr. Brister’s wishes, Hastings Funeral Home ofMorgantown provided cremation services.

Family and friends were received for a memorial visitation inMorgantown on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, followed by a memorialworship service on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Cheat Lake CommunityChurch in Morgantown.

A memorial worship service will be held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009,at 2 p.m. at Woodland Hills Baptist Church, 3rd Floor Chapel, and3327 Old Canton Rd. in Jackson.

Internment will follow immediately thereafter with burial inLakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd. in Jackson with LakewoodFuneral Home in charge of internment.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship fund will beestablished at the School of Pharmacy at West Virginia Universityand his family requests that any memorial gifts be given to thatscholarship fund.

Alvin Harris

Graveside services for Alvin Harris, of Monticello, are 2 p.m.Thursday, Jan. 8, at Mt. Zion M.B. Church Cemetery in Sontag.Williams Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harris died Jan. 1, 2009, at his residence. He was born inLawrence County on Jan. 21, 1959, to C.W. Davis and Annie LouHarris Hilliard.

He was disabled.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Annie Lou HarrisHilliard; his grandparents, Pearlene and Versie Harris Sr.; agreat-grandmother, Annie Harris, who reared him.

Survivors are his father, C.W. Davis, of Martinsville; abrother, Alexander Davis, of Wesson; his uncles, Versie Harris andwife, Joyce, and Charles Harris, all of Corona, N.Y.; a great aunt,Barbara Reese, of Sontag; a caregiver, Annie Graves Bussey, ofSontag; and his extended family, the Alexander Davis family, ofSontag.

Rubie Lee Tucker Howard

Services for Rubie Lee Tucker Howard, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.Thursday, Jan. 8, at Avery Chapel AME Church in Brookhaven withburial in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation is Wednesday from 1 until 7 p.m. at Williams Mortuarywith family present from 6 until 7 p.m..

Mrs. Howard, 89, died Jan. 2, 2009, at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter in Brookhaven. She was born in Forrest County on Nov. 13,1919, to Leonard Tucker Sr. and Zadie Ratcliff Tucker.

She was a graduate of Brookhaven colored schools. She worked asan upholsterer for Brookhaven Mattress Works and retired from BrookManor Nursing Home. She was a member of Avery Chapel AMEChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Leonard”Sonny” Tucker Jr.; her sisters, Josie Tucker Harrison and MaryTucker; a granddaughter, Sandra Williams; a grandson, CourtneyHooker; and a son-in-law, Harvis Williams.

Survivors are her daughters, Vivian Howard Williams, PatriciaArnold Sias, Rose Arnold Smith and Doris Arnold, all of Brookhaven;her special cousin, Mable Blair, of Racine, Wis.; her 12grandchildren; her 29 great-grandchildren; her eightgreat-great-grandchildren; and her many nieces, nephews and otherrelatives.
