Loyd Star holds off Bogue Chitto

Playmaker Ashton Fox’s 17 points helped the undefeated Loyd StarHornets to a 65-43 win over the visiting Bogue Chitto BobcatsFriday night. Loyd Star improved to 17-0 overall and remains 6-0 inDivision 6-2A play.

In the varsity girls contest, center Haley Sones fired in agame-high 23 points to direct the Lady Hornets to a 55-51 comebackvictory over the Lady ‘Cats. Sones also pulled down 13 rebounds,made 7 assists and blocked 4 shots.

Loyd Star hosts Division 6-2A Wesson Tuesday for four games,beginning at 4 p.m., with the junior varsity girls.

L.Star 65, B. Chitto 43

The Hornets, coached by Gene (Moochie) Britt, had a big 20-5fourth quarter to secure the win over the Bobcats. At halftime,Loyd Star led Bogue Chitto 45-38.

“We finally got rolling in the fourth quarter like we should,”said Britt after the win. “Bogue Chitto outplayed us in the firstthree quarters. That is the best I have seen Bogue Chitto play. Westruggled all night and got in early foul trouble. Our benchstepped up for us. I’m glad to get the win.”

Glenn Thomas pumped in 16 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for theHornets. Collecting 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals was McKinleyHamilton. DeAndre Butler finished with 12 points and 10 reboundsfor a double -double.

“We played good for three quarter,” said Bogue Chitto first-yearboys coach Curt Crain. “But we started to make some key mistakes tostart the fourth. We dug ourselves in a hole and could not get outof it. We are still learning but we are coming together aswell.”

The Bobcats (5-11, 2-2) were led by Justin London’s 11 pointsand 5 rebounds. Fred Tillman followed with 7 points and 4rebounds.

L. Star 55, B. Chitto 51

A 12-5 fourth quarter run by the Loyd Star girls (15-4, 4-2)secured the come-from- behind win. Going into the final frame, the’Cats (12-4, 3-1) led the Lady Hornets 50-39.

In the final minute of play, Bogue Chitto cut the deficit to 1point, 52-51. Loyd Star’s Sarah Falvey nailed a free throw followedby Sones with a pair of freebies to push their lead to 4points.

“We had a good first quarter,” said Loyd Star girls coach BillyVaughn. “We were focused and ready to play. Bogue Chitto is so hardto defend because of their shooters. But we figured out a way towin the fourth quarter by hitting crucial free throws at theend.”

Falvey was the second high-scorer for the Lady Hornets with 11points. Erica Smith finished with 9 points. Shannon Chester grabbed10 recounds, made 5 steals and had 5 assists.

“We came out dead,” said Bogue Chitto girls coach ChristiTerrell. “We started off down about 19-0 and played comeback therest of the night. We waited too late to want to win. Haley Sonesplayed a great game for Loyd Star.”

Kelli Howard and Aneshia Dillon scored 18 points each for the’Cats. Howard also led off the backboards with 8 rebounds.

Junior varsity action

The Bogue Chitto boys knocked off Loyd Star 44-31.

The Bobcats were led by Mike Harris, Josh Graham and TevinTobias with 9 points apiece.

Zach Smith paced the Hornets with 20 points.

The ‘Cats dumped the Lady Hornets 29-19.

Tesheon Rogers led Bogue Chitto with 12 points. Netting 14points for Loyd Star was Courtney Watts.
