BA girls, boys notch wins over Parklane

Brookhaven Academy gave itself a confidence boost Tuesday night,sweeping Class AAA McComb Parklane Academy in John R. GrayGymnasium. The Lady Cougars roared to a 55-46 win, paced byfreshman guard Terah Winborne’s 17 points.

The Cougars prevailed 69-63 over the Parklane Pioneers as JakeReed’s 21 points led 5 players in double figures. He was followedby Sidney Chaffin with 14 points, Blaine Roberts with 12 and JoshWinborne and Jamison Powell with 11 apiece.

Brookhaven Academy hosts Copiah Academy Friday night forDistrict 4-AA action and entertains Natchez Trinity Saturday.

The Lady Cougars (22-4, 7-0) overcame a slow start to defeatParklane. BA coach Barry Gray increased his team’s full-courtpressure in the second quarter and they raced to a 30-20 halftimelead.

“(Parklane) beat us by 10 in the second game of the season so itshows we are coming along pretty good,” said Gray. “It’s good tobeat a AAA team and that gives us confidence.”

Gray watched sophomore center Anna Katelyn Mangold and freshmanforward Laura Beth Wright chalk up double-doubles. Mangold workedinside for 14 points and 15 rebounds. Wright collected 12 pointsand 11 rebounds.

Winborne also had 5 assists in the win. The BA girls overcamechilly 32 percent shooting from the field by making 19 of 33 freethrows, including 10 of 15 in the second quarter when Parklanecommitted 8 of its 23 turnovers.

The Lady Pioneers (10-14), coached by Russell Cruise, have beenslowed by injuries this season. They were directed by blonde seniorpoint guard Caitlin Adams and senior center Lindsey Clark whoscored 18 and 11 points respectively. Clark also had 11rebounds.

The Cougars (18-5, 6-1) erased a 35-30 halftime deficit to beatParklane (14-8), which is under the direction of Ricky Gray, a 1977Brookhaven Academy graduate. Parklane’s 2 strong post players, 6-8junior Jared Bullock, and 6-6 senior Blake Rhodus; encounteredearly foul trouble.

“This is a good Brookhaven-McComb rivalry, with close games”said Gray. “Their ability to slow us down and keep us from runningwas major. They got our two bigs (Bullock and Rhodus) in foultrouble, too.”

Bullock picked up his fourth personal foul with 3:55 left in thethird qurter and Parklane leading 43-41. Reed ignited the Cougarswith 3 straight field goals, including 2 hook shots from thelane.

The Cougars outrebounded Parklane 36-22. Reed grabbed 9rebounds, Powell 7 and Roberts 5.

BA coach Dale Watts said he was happy to see his team overcome17 turnovers. “This was a fantastic win for us against a strongteam. We made far too many mistakes and too many turnovers.”

Watts said, “Blaine Roberts showed a lot of leadership and JoshWinborne made some big shots for us.”

Winborne’s soft jumper off the glass gave his team an 8-point,60-52 lead with 5:14 left in the game.

Parklane, which had 22 turnovers, was paced by guard BlakeBrown’s 16 points. Rhodus had 15 points and 7 rebounds. ParkerMoore added 12 points.

Junior High Results

The BA boys beat Parklane 66-38, led by Brock Smith’s 21 points.Will Hickman added 14.

Parklane got 14 points from Spencer Ronley.

The Parklane girls defeated BA 20-15, led by Maggie Paulk’s 7points. Emily Alford had 5 points.

Six points by Dana Sartin led BA and Meredith Allen netted4.
