Brookhaven girls shut out Florence

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers shut out the Florence girls 1-0Tuesday night on frosty King Field. Sophomore Amy Hoover scored thewinning goal in the 31st minute of the first half. Hoover shot fromright side of the goalie box and hit the left corner of thegoal.
BHS goalkeeper Laney Wall made 5 saves. Kelly Rake provided thescoring assist
“We played pretty good defense,” said BHS coach Kevin Bower.”Katy Hoover made a lot of saves.”
“In the beginning of the second half we kept it (ball) onFlorence’s end for about 30 minutes,” said Bower. “It was a realphysical match, with yellow cards on both teams.”
The Lady Panthers improved their record to 10-5-1 overall and5-1 in the division, gaining a first place tie with Florence.However, the Lady Eagles have an edge in points scored and own theNo. 1 seed in the division.
Bower said his team would travel to Long Beach Tuesday for theopening round of the state playoffs. They travel to MendenhallFriday and host Mendenhall Saturday to conclude divisionaction.
Seniors recognized on Senior Night were Lydia Warren, HannahLowman, Katie Hoover and Kaley Farris. Panthers honored were ScottWarnock, Jake Errington, Gray Holland, Kelby Brown, Payne McGowen,Blaise Braden and Chris Lowman.
In the varsity boys game, division champ Florence whipped thePanthers 8-0. The Eagles flocked to a 4-0 halftime lead.
The Panthers are 4-11-1 overall and 2-4 in the division. Theytrail Florence and McComb in the division race.
