Hinds AHS boys get revenge; Loyd Star Lady Hornets win

UTICA – Powered by Kelsey Stewart’s 28-point outburst, the HindsAHS Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss at Loyd Star and whipped theHornets 95-68 Friday night in Division 6-2A basketball action.Stewart led 4 players in double figures as Erik Burks netted 22points, Derek Burks 14 and Nicholas Miles 12.
In the varsity girls game, senior guard Shannon Chester directedthe Lady Hornets to a 35-33 revenge victory over Hinds AHS. Seniorcenter Haley Sones chippd in 10 points as only 3 players scored forLoyd Star.
Loyd Star resumes division play Tuesday night at St. Andrew’s inRidgeland.
Hinds AHS 95, Loyd Star 68
” (Bulldogs) had everything going their way,” said Loyd Starcoach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “They played extremely well and wedidn’t play very well at all. They got a lot of second and thirdshots on us.”
Britt said Hinds AHS coach Keith Williams didn’t’ pull hisstarters until the final 45 seconds of the game. Loyd Star hadknocked off the Bulldogs 71-65 last month, Dec. 19.
The Bulldogs hiked their record to 19-2 overall and 8-1 in thedivision. Their only other loss was to Class 4A Port Gibson.
Senior guard Ashton Fox led the Hornets with 19 points. DeAndreButler added 17 points and Glen Thomas a15.
“It’s a big gym and we never play well up there,” said Britt.His Hornets cut their deficit to 9 points in the third quarter butcould come no closer.
“Hinds is quick and they will shoot layups on you because theyare so fast,” said Britt. “I want to thank our fans for coming uphere to watch us play.”
Loyd Star only made 3 of 18 shots from beyond the 3-pointarc.
The Hornets (20-1, 9-1) got 9 rebounds and 3 steals from Thomas.Butler and Fox each had 5 rebounds.
Loyd Star had 16 turnovers in the game. The Bulldogs startedstrong and hit their first 5 field goal attempts. They led 41-24 athalftime.
The Lady Hornets (18-5, 7-3) got 13 rebounds from Chester and 6from Sones, plus 5 steals. Leah Britt made 4 steals. Erica Smithhanded out 3 assists as they avenged a 46-37 loss at Loyd Star.
“Both teams played pretty good defense,” said Loyd Star coachBilly Vaughn, “We just found a way to win in the fourthquarter.”
Chester tied the game at 33-all with 31 seconds left to play.She made 2 free throws with 20 seconds left to give Loyd Star itsmargin of victory. The Lady Hornets were 6-for-6 at the charityline in the second half.
Junior Varsity Action
In the JV boys game, Hinds beat Loyd Star 55-44. The Hornets got18 points from Keldric Smith and 14 from Adrian Newton.
Darion Robinson and Jarvis Taylor each had 16 points for theBulldogs.
