Loyd Star takes 2 over St. Andrew’s

RIDGELAND – Glenn Thomas sacked 17 points and McKinley Hamilton13 as Loyd Star held off the St. Andrew’s Saints 50-46 Tuesdaynight in a Division 6-2A showdown. DeAndre Butler chipped in 10points.

In the varsity girls game, Loyd Star beat the Lady Saints 44-26,powered by senior center Haley Sones with 21 points.

The Hornets (21-1, 10-1) got 9 rebounds fromThomas. Butler had 5 boards. Thomas and Joseph Shelby each had 3assists.

Loyd Star overcame 15 turnovers to beat the Saints who produceda 22-point fourth quarter.

“St. Andrew’s started making threes in the fourth quarter,” saidLoyd Star coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “McKinley Hamilton made a key1-and-1 free throw with 10 seconds left to put us up by four.”

Britt said senior point guard Ashton Fox didn’t start the gamebecause of disciplinary reasons. Fox is the team’s leading scorerwith a 20 points per game average but he went scoreless.

Michael Taucher led St. Andy’s with 15 points.

The Lady Hornets (19-5, 8-3) got 8 rebounds, 5assists and 7 steals from Shannon Chester. Sones had 7 rebounds, 4blocked shots and 5 steals. Erica Smith had 6 rebounds. SarahFalvey made 3 assists.

“We took them out of their game in the second quarter with ourfull-court pressure,” said Loyd Star girls coach Billy Vaughn.”Haley Sones had a pretty good game for us.”

Loyd Star hosts McLaurin Friday night in its final homeappearance of the season. It will be Senior Night.
