Wesson sweeps St. Andy’s

WESSON – Sophomore guard Kyle Cross had his biggest night of theseason for the Wesson Cobras Friday night. Cross fired in 12points, going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line; collected 3rebounds, 3 assists and a blocked shot to lead the Cobras to a key39-33 Division 6-2A win against the St. Andrew’s Saints.

Senior members of the Wesson boys basketball team honored lastnight were Cody King, Josh Hood and Samuel King.

In varsity the girls game, sophomore forward Shauntay Walkerpowered Wesson with 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-doubleon their way to a 42-33 victory. The win secured the first placeseed in the Division 6-2A tournament that starts Feb. 9, atEnterprise.

Wesson finishes regular season play Tuesday night at McLaurin. Ajunior varsity boys game begins at 5 p.m. followed by the varsitygirls at 6 and the boys at 7:30.

Wesson 39, St. Andrew’s

“Kyle Cross had his best game of the year,” said Wesson boyscoach Ron Kessler after the win. “We played with more intensity inthe second half.”

In the first quarter, the Cobras (17-8, 5-6) and the Saints(4-16, 1-9) struggled offensively, with St. Andrew’s leading Wesson8-2.

Second-quarter action saw the Cobras put together a 12-0 run onthe Saints to carry a 14-8 lead at halftime.

“We had great support from the bench,” added Kessler. Coming offthe bench with Fetcko were Hunter Hood and eighth grader TerryBrown.

“We had been shooting well,” said Kessler. “Tonight, we couldn’tshoot it into the ocean. The bench stepped it up tonight.”

Going into the final frame, Wesson led St. Andrew’s 21-17 andfinished the game with an 18-15 scoring run to preserve thewin.

Contributing to the Wesson win with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3steals was Tyler Lumley.

The Saints, coached by Steven Redd, were led by MichaelTaucher’s 10 points and 15 rebounds. Nathan Slater netted 8points.

Joining the Wesson boys on the bench as an honorary coach wasTommy Maples who played at Co-Lin High back in 1969 and scored 44points for the school’s all-time record.

Wesson 39, St. Andrew’s 33

The Wesson girls (20-5, 10-1) jumped on St. Andrew’s (6-17, 3-7)in the first-quarter play for a 13-6 lead. At halftime, the LadyCobras held a 20-12 advantage over the Lady Saints.

“It was not a pretty win,” said Wesson girls coach Hugh Webb.”It secured us first place in the district tournament.”

Going into the fourth quarter, Wesson held a 9-point, 36-27lead.

Webb complimented Walker for her contribution Friday night.”Shauntay Walker did a really good job tonight. She played greatdefense. And Macie Case played a good ball game, too.”

This is the second straight year for the Wesson girls to win 20games.

Case added support with 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.

Coach Laurie Wright’s Lady Saints were led by Carrie Sweet with15 points and 9 rebounds. Amy Handelman pulled down 8 rebounds.

Junior varsity boys

Zach Fetcko’s 10 points powered the Cobras to a 39-32 win overthe Saints. Scoring 9 points was Hunter Hood followed by D.J.Coleman with 6.

Jaren Reeves-Darby led St. Andrew’s with 12 points. ReeveJacobus finished with 7.
