The Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats, the Loyd Star Hornets and LadyHornets, the Wesson Lady Cobras, the Franklin County Bulldogs andthe Lawrence County Lady Cougars will see action tonight in thequarterfinals of the MHSAA South Mississippi Tournaments.

It’s a must-win situation for every team in the quarterfinals. Avictory tonight sends the winners to the semifinals Friday andchampionship/consolation games Saturday. If a team loses today, theseason is over.

The top three teams from each class advance to the StateTournament beginning Monday at the Mississippi Coliseum inJackson.

The Bogue Chitto girls host the Class 1A South playoffsbeginning today at R.L “Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium. Bogue Chitto (24-6)meets Weir at 4 p.m., Sebastopol faces Thomastown at 5:30, SouthLeake tackles East Webster at 7 and McAdams squares off againstPisgah at 8:30.

In Class 2A, the Loyd Star and Wesson girls are at ScottCentral. Loyd Star (23-7) faces Kemper Co. at 4 and Wesson (26-5)meets Newton at 8:30.

At Richton, the Loyd Star boys (25-3) take on Taylorsville in 2Aaction at 5:30.

The Franklin County boys (16-6) clash with Raymond at 5:30 in 3Aquarterfinals play at Morton.

In 4A girls action at Northeast Jones, Lawrence County meetsWest Jones at 7.

The Cats’ are coached by Christi Terrell. Bogue Chitto whippedEthel Monday night 73-53 in the opening round.

“Weir is very athletic,” said Terrell. “They have height. Theyare quick. They have a 6-1 post (player). They have good outsideshooting as well. Our girls are ready and excited.

“I hope the girls are ready to play,” added Terrell. “At thislevel, all the teams are good.”

The Lady Hornets are under the direction of Billy Vaughn. LoydStar dumped clipped Lumberton 46-43 Monday on the road.

“Kemper County is athletic,” said Vaughn. “They have pretty goodheight and play a zone defense. They have pretty good point guardsand a 3-point shooter.

“It’s good to be in the playoffs,” continued Vaughn. “You haveto be ready to play. We have to get in our game plan and stick toit.”

The Hornets are coached by Gene (Moochie) Britt. Loyd Star putaway Lumberton Tuesday with a 61-59 win in double overtime.

“Taylorsville has a very good ball team,” said Britt. “BillyHamilton is their point guard and is one of the leading scorers inthe state. Darius Hamilton is next best. They are quick. They pressa lot and play a 1-2-2.

“We have to slow them down,” added Britt. “Anyone can beat younow. This is the furthest the Loyd Star boys have gone in the last15 years.”

The Lady Cobras are coached by Hugh Webb. Monday night theWesson girls put away Richton 70-54.

“Newton has one of the best girls teams in the state,” saidWebb. “They’re one of the top five in the state. They are wellcoached and shoot the ball well.”

Last year, Newton eliminated Wesson in the first round.

“We were beaten soundly,” Webb recalled. Newton is still strong.They run a 2-2-1 press and a Kentucky flex type offense. Theyscreen and basket cut real well. They have good perimetershooters.

“I think we can play with them,” added Webb. “We are realtickled to be where we are.”

The Bulldogs are coached by Chris Jordan. Franklin County nippedNewton County 57-55 Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Lawrence girls, coached by Vicki Rutland, defeated Bay St.Louis 67-36 Monday night on the road to advance and play West Jonesat Northeast Jones.
