Bay Springs ends Wesson’s season

FOREST — The youthful Lady Cobras of Wesson (27-7) had theirCinderella season brought to an end against two senior-laden squadsin Scott Central and Bay Springs this weekend in the Class 2A SouthState Tournament.

The Lady Cobras were introduced to a new style of basketball inthe tournament that saw rough, aggressive play as the rule insteadof the exception. The Lady Cobras were hammered all weekend byolder, more physical brands of basketball. The development ofWesson over the next year into a veteran squad of seniorsthemselves will be exciting for the Wesson community.

“I just left a bunch of teary-eyed young ladies in that dressingroom,” stated a proud Wesson head coach Hugh Webb. “I am verypleased with the journey these young ladies just went on and thegood news is that they will get better. I am tickled at theaccomplishments and strides we made this year.”

Scott Central 44, Wesson 21

The District 6-2A champs ran into the buzzsaw in the South Statetournament champions Friday evening in the Lady Rebels of ScottCentral. The Lady Rebels whipped the Lady Cobras 44-21 and led35-10 at the half.

Wesson, one night removed from filling it up against Newton,could not buy a basket in the first period and trailed 15-2 afterone quarter. The Lady Cobras were led by Ann Shelby Davis andShauntay Walker who each had 6 points on a horrific offensive nightfor the Lady Cobras.

Tyisha Amos led the Lady Rebels with 16. The Lady Rebelsdefeated Kemper County 38-34 Saturday night to win the South Statetitle.

Bay Springs 73, Wesson 44

Wesson had no answer for Shumond Hughes who dominated the insidegame with 27 points for Bay Springs. Bay Springs raced out to a26-6 first quarter lead and led 41-19 at the half.

Davis and Walker each had 12 points for the Lady Cobras whilejunior Macie Case collected 6 points on the night. Walker had 6rebounds for the Lady Cobras as well.

Taquita Collier had 17 points in support of Hughes for BaySprings as they advance to the state tourney at the coliseum withthe victory.
