Hornets hammer Wesson

WESSON — The Loyd Star Hornets hammered out a tough 16-2Division 6-2A win Monday night over the Wesson Cobras on arain-soaked field. The game was originally scheduled for lastFriday but was moved because of the weekend rains.

With the win, Loyd Star improved to 7-4 on the season and 3-1 indivision play. Wesson fell to 3-1 in the division and 6-4overall.

The Hornets avenged an 8-4 loss to the Cobras last Tuesday nightat Loyd Star.

Senior ace Drew Weaver (3-1) went the distance for the Hornets,fanning 3 batters, walking 1, hitting 1 batter and allowing 11hits. Weaver has signed a baseball scholarship with Co-Lin.

“Drew didn’t have his best stuff tonight,” said Loyd Star headbaseball coach Jonathan Breakfield after the game. “The fieldconditions affected both pitchers.

“I’m proud of our guys,” continued Breakfield. “We were ready toplay tonight.”

Absorbing the loss was Matt P. Smith (1-3) working 3.1 inningswith 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 1hit batter and 8 hits allowed. Workingthe final innings with 5 strikeouts, 4 walks and 10 runs allowedwas Caleb Broome.

“Loyd Star is a great hitting ballclub,” said Wesson headbaseball coach Hugh Knight. “We kept hitting the ball right tothem. It was not one of our best efforts.”

Korey Allen collected 4 singles at the plate for the Hornets. T.J. Floyd and Weaver both singled 3 times and doubled. Cody Smithsmashed a double and a single. Doubling was Tyler Case. MarquisHayes ripped 2 singles as the Hornets exploded for 7 runs in thetop of the seventh.

The Cobras were led by Matt P. Smith with a double and 2singles. Catcher Matt S. Smith belted 3 singles.

Loyd Star jumped on Wesson for a 4-1 lead in the first inning.By the end of the fourth, the Hornets commanded a 9-2 lead.
