Lady Wolves elude SW

SUMMIT – Showing the effects of a week-long, spring breaklayoff, the Co-Lin Lady Wolves came from behind twice to edge theSouthwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears Monday in aSouth Division twinbill. They won the opener 6-3 and the finale 7-6in 1 extra inning.

Co-Lin (16-7, 7-3) resumes play Wednesday, hosting LSU-Eunicefor a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Southwest plays at Jones Countytomorrow, starting at 4 p.m.

Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent was happy to escape with a sweepbut said his team must improve on offense and defense. “We mustplay better defense to give ourselves a chance. We’re not hittingthe ball well enough as team to be making this many errors.”

Kent pointed to his team’s 9 errors.

“Our 6-9 hitters were 0 for 24 on the day,” Kent noted. “We needbetter contributions throughout the lineup.”

Co-Lin 6, Southwest 3

Co-Lin erased a 3-2 deficit with a 2-out, 4-run, seventh-inningrally. After Southwest retired the first 2 batters, Terri Hodgesdelivered a 1-2 count single to left field. Candace Avants followedwith a single to left and Danielle Wilson smashed a double tocenter, scoring 2 runs and taking a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Monea Cameron then slugged a 2-run homer to centerfield and Co-Lin led 6-3.

On the mound, sophomore Rebecca Rousseau (9-3) tossed a 3-hitterand picked up the win. She gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 6 andwalked 3.

“We put too much pressure on ourselves defensively, committingfour errors,” said Kent. “I’m proud of our girls for battling back.We were down to the last strike with nobody on base and two out. Wehad some girls really step up big-time.”

Co-Lin 7, Southwest 6

Melissa McFarland picked up the win in relief of Hodges. Sheslammed the door in the bottom of the eighth with 3 straightouts.

McFarland (5-0), a freshman from Meadville, accounted for 2strikeouts and scattered 2 hits.

“Melissa came up big for us in a pressure situation,” said Kent.”Terri also threw well but we didn’t support her defensively.

“All six of Southwest’s runs were unearned,” he continued. “Wemust take better care of the ball.”

With the game tied 6-6 after 7, the international rule was ineffect. Holli Smith was placed at second base. Missy Paulina laiddown a sacrifice bunt, moving Smith to third. Chelsey Millerfollowed with a grounder to shortstop and Smith slid safely homewith the winning run.

Avants produced the defensive play of the game in the secondinning. With the bases loaded and 2 out, Avants snuffed out thethreat with a diving catch down the left field line.

Wilson doubled twice for Co-Lin. Smith and Cameron alsodoubled.
