With the dawn of spring comes time to break out the mower andcare for the lawn, and like any other grass owner, the city ofBrookhaven is making plans to tend the yard.

At a called meeting Tuesday night after a work session on thecity’s comprehensive plan, the board of aldermen accepted the lowbid for mowing grassy areas along Highway 51 and BrookwayBoulevard, as well as Exit 40 and areas downtown such as RailroadPark.

City Public Works Director Steve Moreton told the board thatJesse Gross from Brandon had submitted the low bid at $600 percutting, or $1,200 per month. The next lowest bid was for $1,400per cutting.

“Last year we had a low bidder who had to come in and changedhis bid after he did it the first time, and we worked with him onthat,” Moreton said. “His bid was still lower than all the otherones that were offered. This year we feel like since there’s such adifference between the bids we should at least give him achance.”

Gross will also cut the grass at the police station once, afterwhich point Police Chief Pap Henderson said he will care for thelawn himself.

Mayor Bob Massengill told the board that Congressman GreggHarper will be in the county boardroom on Wednesday, April 9, from10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

“The purpose is for him to come down and get to know us better,and for us to let him know some of our needs and concerns and askquestions about the economic stimulus,” Massengill said.

Following the called meeting was a lengthy executive session fora personnel matter.

After the closed meeting, a motion was made to seek AirportManager Clifford Britt’s termination or resignation. Officialscalled Britt and he resigned, effective immediately.
