Joseph Russell Davis

Services for Joseph Russell Davis, of Monticello, were 10 a.m.Thursday, April 2, at New Zion Baptist Church in Monticello withburial in the church cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home was in charge ofarrangements.

Mr. Davis, 80, died March 31, 2009, at his residence. He wasborn in Lawrence County on Aug. 21, 1928, to the Rev. Walter ArchieDavis and Myrtle Russell Davis.

He retired from Herring Gas. He served in the U.S. Army duringthe Korean conflict. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church,where he served as chairman of deacons. Mr. Davis was also a Masonand Shriner at the Monticello lodge.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, ClaudeDavis, Atley Davis, Charles Davis, Crawford Davis, and EmmittDavis; and a sister, Pearl Butler.

Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Helen G. Davis; hisdaughters, Phyllis Davis and Patricia Smith and husband, Glen, allof Monticello; a brother, Eutha Davis, of Monticello; his fivegrandchildren, Jeremy King, Jamie King, Hope Hawn, Rebekkah Byersand Rachael Carney; his seven great-grandchildren; and agreat-great-grandchild.
