Various contests will be held throughout Friday night at theLawrence County High School football field in support of the fightagainst cancer.

Fourteen teams will vie for the title of largest fundraiserduring the American Cancer Society’s Lawrence County Relay For Lifefrom 4 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday. Organizers are hoping for anextraordinary night to celebrate the Relay’s 25th anniversary.

The survivor’s reception will begin at 6 p.m. with the walkfollowing around 7 p.m., said Marilyn Mullins, event chairperson.The survivor events will be followed by the children’s walk andteam walks.

The luminary service will begin at 9 p.m. to remember thevictims of cancer.

Teams will be selling a variety of items and fair-type foods toraise money for the fight against cancer.

“Everything made there goes for Relay For Life,” Mullinssaid.

A Children’s Corner will open at 5 p.m. with jumpers andcarnival games to keep the kids busy while parents participate inthe event.

Interspersed throughout the night are contests and otherfundraising events, including a live auction by John Mark Riley, aNew Hebron auctioneer.

“We have several nice items that have been donated for theauction,” Mullins said. “The items will be on display during therelay.”

A special event early Saturday morning will honor this year’stheme of “Decades of Hope.”

“Toward the end we’ll have a battle of the decades,” Mullinssaid. “Each team will perform a number from their decade.”

Organizers are hopeful for a successful event despite theeconomic downturn. However, they realize money is tight foreveryone and therefore have not set a firm goal figure.

“We would like to meet last year’s goal or exceed it, but withthe economy the way it is we’ll just have to see,” Mullins said.”We’ll do the best we can and what we raise is what we do.”

The event will be moved to the James Givens AgriculturalBuildings in case of rain.
