CL women win South

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves maintained their superiority inthe MACJC South Division, sweeping the Jones County Junior CollegeLady Bobcats 9-1 and 4-0 Monday. The sweep secured the Southchampionship and earned Co-Lin the right to host the StateTournament that begins Friday.

“It’s been a brutal division in the South and we were fortunateto win a lot of close games,” said Co-Lin coach Allen Kent. “I’mreally proud of our girls. It’s an honor to be able to hoststate.”

Co-Lin finished 20-4 in the South and won 10 straight divisiongames. Pearl River knocked Gulf Coast out of title contention bysweeping the Lady Bulldogs last week.

Co-Lin 9. Jones Co. 1

Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Rousseau (9 K, 2 BB) authored a2-hitter for Co-Lin. She raised her record to 16-3 on theseason.

“Rebecca has won some big games for us this year,” said Kent.”We count on her to win the first game in a doubleheader.”

Freshman shortstop Daniele Wilson slapped a 3-run homer in thefourth after Terri Hodges and Candace Avants hit back-to-backsingles.

Kent said Wilson failed on 2 bunting attempts to advnance therunners so he let her swing away.

Monea Cameron hit a triple to center and Missy Paulina followdwith an RBI single. Ashley Jones slapped a 2-out, RBI double.

Co-Lin 4, Jones Co 0

Freshman Terri Hodges (10 K, 1 BB) pitched a 4-hit shutout inthe finale. She got seventh inning relief help from Jones whorecorded the final out and allowed 1 hit.

Hodges scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by freshmanthird baseman Holli Smith. In the third, Alex Foster’s sacrificefly made it 2-0.

Co-Lin will meet North Division No. 4 Northwest Friday at noonin the opening round of the state tournament.

Kent said freshman pitchere Melissa McFarland’s finger washealing and she should be available for the state tournament.

Longtime Co-Lin assistant coach Johnny Williams was honoredduring a pregame ceremony and received a plaque from Co-Linpresident Dr. Ronnie Nettles. Williams plans to retire after thisseason.
