“I am very, very, very humbled, honored and excited to be theRepublican nominee,” said Sullivan, who is participating in herfirst political race. “I will work hard within the next weeks towin the whole election. I will meet with my supporters and I willdo much of the same things I have done before, which is talk toindividuals and ask for their support and get the word out as bestI can.”
Though Sullivan came away with a large victory, she said waitingfor the votes to be counted was a stressful affair.
“I was not confident at all,” she said. “I was very nervous. Ithink (Pappas) ran a very, very honorable race. I think it’s ashame both of us couldn’t be in there, I really do. I wish him thebest, and I think his time will come. And I hope his time willcome.”
Pappas, meanwhile, was back working in downtown Wednesdaymorning with the race behind him.
“I’m not bummed, I’m not disappointed,” he said. “The onlyreason I ran was because I was concerned with the future for thenext four years. I’m not bummed out about not getting (elected) -I’ve got plenty to do. Mrs. Sullivan won by a good bit of the vote.If that’s what the people wanted, that’s the way it should be.”
In the only other contested race on Tuesday’s Republican ballot, incumbent Ward Four Alderwoman Shirley Estes earned the right toadvance by defeating challenger Asem Zeini approximately two toone. She will go on to face Independent candidate David Smith inthe competition for her second four-year term.
Estes gathered in 407 votes to Zeini’s 211 in Ward Four, wheremore than 600 Republican ballots were cast.
“I feel very grateful the voters who came out today had enoughconfidence in me and what I’ve done over the last five years,” saidEstes, who won a special election for alderman following herhusband Don’s death. “I know I haven’t done everything perfectly, but I’ve worked hard for Ward Four and the city.”
Estes said she knows little about Smith, her upcoming opponent, but she doesn’t plan any changes in her campaign.
“I’m just gonna continue to run my race and do what I’m doing,”she said. “I’m an alderman and I’m working. I’ll just continue torun the race and do my job until we get to the generalelection.”
Estes congratulated Zeini on a race well run.
“We were friends, and we are still friends,” she said.
Zeini, whose Tuesday defeat ended his first-ever try at localpolitics, said he was impressed with Estes’ support base. He saidthe stiff competition made him work harder over the course of thecampaign.
“I appreciate the people of Brookhaven who have supported me thelast 30 years, and thankful I’m a part of Brookhaven,” Zeini said.”I chose Brookhaven out of 20 cities I’ve lived in, and it’s myhome. It will always be my home.”
