Krewe offers $1,000 scholarships

Brookhaven’s Krewe of Ceres is now offering scholarships for thefirst time in the organization’s 43-year history.
>Candice Smith, a Krewe member working on the scholarshipprogram, said two $1,000 scholarships are available to areagraduating seniors. The deadline for applications is June 1.
“This is the first year we’re giving the scholarships,” shesaid. “We began putting money back two years ago.”
The only requirement to apply is that the money must be for fallregistration at an educational institution, Smith said. However,Krewe members evaluating the applications will consider severalqualifications.
“Obviously, this is a service organization so we look atcommunity involvement, honors recommendations at school and gradepoint average, but primarily it’s the voluntary service thatthey’ve done (that will get them the scholarship),” she said.
The goals of Krewe of Ceres is to “recognize the area’s mostoutstanding young people” and to raise money for local charitablecauses, Smith said.
