Effie Newson Eley

Services for Effie Newson Eley, of Brookhaven, formerly ofMonticello, are 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Quinn’s Temple Church ofGod in Christ in Monticello with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is Friday from 1 until 6 p.m. at WilliamsMortuary.

Mrs. Eley, 87, died May 5, 2009, at Countrybrook Living Center.She was born in Lawrence County on Jan. 13, 1922, to John Newsonand Prudence Stovall Newson.

She was retired. She was a member of Quinn’s Temple Church ofGod in Christ.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Levie EleySr.; a daughter, Martha Hill; her sons, Levie Eley Jr. and JohnEley; her three grandchildren; and several brothers andsisters.

Survivors are her daughters, Johnnie Holloway, Ethel Johnson andhusband, Eddie, and Ida Pearl Eley, all of Monticello; her sons,Leroy Eley, Nathaniel Eley and wife, Avenell, Ernest Eley andBooker T. Eley, all of Monticello; a sister, Betty Maye, of Topeka;her 62 grandchildren; her 129 great-grandchildren; and her 14great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, otherrelatives and friends.

Ethel Pauline Brister Townsend

Ethel Pauline Brister Townsend, 87, of Sedalia, Mo., enteredinto heaven on Tuesday, May 4, 2009, at Bothwell Regional HealthCenter while surrounded by her family.

Pauline, as she was known by her friends and family, was born onMarch 27, 1922, in Bogue Chitto, and is the daughter of Eugene andLena Brister. She was united in marriage to Kermit Townsend in 1946and they moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1950 and settled in the OakCliff area. Her husband passed away in 1984 after 38 years ofmarriage and she continued to live in Oak Cliff until 2005 when shemoved to Sedalia with her son and daughter-in-law.

Pauline was a faithful believer and servant of her Lord andSavior, Jesus Christ. Over the years she was a member ofWestmoreland Heights Baptist Church, Cedar Temple and FernwoodBaptist Church, all in Dallas. She taught Sunday school, played thepiano and organ and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was afaithful prayer warrior. The friendships she made in church wereher dearest and she cherished each one of them until the end.

She selected retail sales as a career and her vivaciouspersonality and inspiring energy helped make that 36-year career arewarding one for her. She was a cosmetic consultant at NeimanMarcus Department store for 21 years and later at Merle Norman for15 years. She was a longtime member of the American BusinessWomen’s Association.

Pauline is survived by two sons, Ken Townsend and his wife,Rosemary, of Cedar Hill, Texas, and Tommy Townsend and his wife,Cindy, of Sedalia. She is also survived by a brother, retired Lt.Col. Jesse E. Brister, of Brookhaven. She has four grandchildren,Lena Saucillo, Erin Hall and Bradley Townsend, of the Dallas/Ft.Worth, Texas, area, and Jon Townsend, of Sundown, Texas. She hasthree great-grandchildren, Kassidi Saucillo, Patrick Saucillo andKaitlyn Townsend.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents;and a brother, Charles Brister.

The family will receive visitors at Laurel Land Funeral Home inDallas from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral services will beheld at Laurel Land on Friday at 2 p.m. with the Revs. JerryMcKitty and Craig Freeman officiating. Pallbearers will be PabloSaucillo, Bradley Townsend, Kyle Hall, Jon Townsend, Jarred Walkerand Chris Bruggman.
