WESSON – Seven members of the State Champion Copiah-LincolnCommunity College Lady Wolves softball team have receivedpost-season awards. Named National Junior College AthleticAssociation (NJCAA) All-Region 23 are pitcher Rebecca Rousseau ofGreenwood, La.; shortstop Daniele Wilson of Destrehan, La, andcenter fielder Monea Cameron of Meadville.

“It’s quite an honor to have three selected to this team,” saidCo-Lin head coach Allen Kent. “There are only 15 players that makethe team, out of 15 community colleges. It says a lot about whatother schools think of our girls.”

The trio, along with sophomore catcher Missy Paulina of LaPlace,La., were also named Mississippi Association of Community andJunior Colleges (MACJC) First Team All-State.

Left fielder Candace Avants of Bogue Chitto, second basemanTerri Hodges and third baseman Holli Smith, both of Brookhaven werenamed to the MACJC Second Team All-State.

Rousseau, a Belhaven College signee, was 19-5 on the year with a1.911 ERA in the circle. She struck out 144 in 150 innings, givingup only 32 walks, while holding opponents to a .195 battingaverage. At the plate, she was fourth on the team in batting with a.368 average and had 20 RBIs. Rousseau was named MACJC Second TeamAll-State her freshman year as a first baseman.

“Rebecca had a great season for us, giving us a chance to winevery single time she was in the circle,” said Kent. “She reallyswung a hot bat during the second half of the season. She was avocal leader on and off the field.”

Cameron, a freshman, set Co-Lin single-season records for homeruns with 10 and runs scored with 41. She also led the team inbatting average (.412) and slugging percentage (.748). Cameron drew18 walks, stole 11 bases and was second on the team in RBIs (39)and hits (49).

“Monea had a breakout year for us,” said Kent. “To see theimprovement from the fall to the spring was something to watch. Sheworked very hard to improve her swing.”

Wilson, a freshman, set Co-Lin single-season records in RBIs(49), doubles (16) and walks (27). She hit for a .403 average, witha team-leading .515 on-base percentage, while boasting a .716slugging percentage. Wilson also led the team in hits (54) and wassecond on the team in homers (8).

“Daniele had a super year offensively and defensively,” saidKent. “She has great hands and a strong, accurate arm. She’s one ofthe best we’ve had in that position.”

Paulina, a William Carey University signee, was the primarycatcher for Rousseasu. She had a 1.000 fielding percentage on 158chances with 150 putouts and 8 assists. At the plate, Paulina hit.315 while collecting 18 RBIs and 4 doubles. She was second on theteam in walks (20). Paulina was named to MACJC Second TeamAll-South Division her freshman year.

Avants, who tied the school record for stolen bases with 17 in2008, was 15-for-15 in stolen bases in 2009. The speedy sophomoredrew 10 walks, scored 28 runs and drove in 9 runs. She was third onthe team in hitting with a .379 batting average. Avants was namedMACJC Second Team All-South Division her freshman year.

Hodges, a freshman, hit .317 with 2 homeruns, 22 RBIs and 11doubles. The Brookhaven High School product had 45 hits and drew 16walks.

Smith, a freshman, had 47 hits, 7 home runs, 34 RBIs and 7doubles. She boasted a .336 batting average, a .536 sluggingpercentage and was 8-for-8 in stolen bases.

The 2009 Lady Wolves finished the season with a 33-12 record andclaimed their third MACJC State Championship in the past fouryears. They were state and region champions in 2008, advancing tothe NJCAA Nationals in Normal, Ill., and finishing runners-up toPhoenix (Ariz.) College.
