Services for Julian Barlow Porter, of Hazlehurst, are 1 p.m.Tuesday, June 9, at Smyrna Baptist Church in Copiah County withburial in the church cemetery. Community Funeral Services is incharge of arrangements.
Visitation is Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at thechurch.
Mr. Porter, 85, died June 7, 2009, at Hospice Ministries inRidgeland after a short illness. He was born in Rolling Fork onJan. 30, 1924, to Charmie Alexander Porter and Mamie BarlowPorter.
He attended Hazlehurst schools. Mr. Porter served in World WarII from 1944 to 1945 aboard the USS Talladega as an engineer ofboat that carried troops ashore under fire at Iwo Jima. TheTalladega also saw duty at Okinawa and the Philippines, which wonhim the right to wear campaign ribbons for the American and theAsiatic-Pacific theaters then later with two Bronze Stars, and thePhilippine Liberation Ribbon. He retired from Dravo Materials inNew Orleans, La.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Rufus R.Porter; his sisters, Charmian P. Broom, Claire P. Camp, Florence P.Melancon, Kathryn P. Taylor; and a nephew, Dennis Melancon.
Survivors are a sister, Shirley P. Ball, of Mobile, Ala.; hisnieces, Cheryl O’Hoyt and husband, Dan, of Columbia, Mona Fletcher,of Pearl River, La., Gwen Dickerson and husband, Rocky, of McComb,Wanda Cater and husband, Jerry, of Arab, Ala., and JenniferMelancon, of Harvey, La.; his nephews, Kenneth Taylor and wife,Margaret, of Purvis, Tommy Broom and wife, Janet, of Mandeville,La., Michael and Chris Melancon, of River Ridge, La., Dwight Ball,of Grand Bay, Ala., and Wesley Taylor and wife, Rachel, ofBrooklyn, Iowa; his 24 great nieces and nephews; his 19 great-greatnieces and nephews; a special friend, Frank Alsage; and a host offamily and friends.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
