Wife killed, husband hurt

A late night car accident claimed the life of an elderlyMeadville woman and injured her husband Saturday on Highway 84 inFranklin County, Mississippi Highway Patrol officials said.

Troop M Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Rusty Boyd said Mary A.Wilkinson, 71, of 5470 Highway 98 East, was eastbound on Highway 84around 11 p.m. Saturday when her 2004 Dodge Intrepid ran off theroad and flipped near Clear Springs Road.

Boyd said it looked like the accident began when Wilkinson’svehicle came off the right side of the road.

“The driver overcorrected and ran back into the eastbound lanes,ran back off the right side, and the vehicle flipped, coming torest upside down off the south side of US84,” Boyd said.

Mary Wilkinson was pronounced dead on the scene, said FranklinCounty Coroner Percy Peeler.

Officials said Lannis Wilkinson, 74, sustained severe injuriesand was transported by ambulance to Franklin County Hospital.Peeler said Lannis Wilkinson underwent surgery in JacksonSunday.

Both Wilkinsons were wearing their seat belts, Boyd said. TheJaws of Life were used to free Mary Wilkinson.

Peeler said Thompson Funeral Home will handle Wilkinson’sarrangements, which are pending.
