Wesson grabs District 6 crown

SUMMIT – In a sweat-soaked, Thursday night pitching duel,Wesson’s Peyton Hood prevailed as his team shaved Summit 4-3 forthe Dixie Youth Baseball Major League 12s District SixChampionship. Summit nearly overcame a 4-0 deficit with a 3-runrally but fell just short in Game 3 of the best-of-threeseries.

Wesson, a 12-6 winner over Summit in Game 1 last Friday atWesson, absorbed a 3-2 defeat Wednesday night after 2 rainpostponements at the Windsor Gay Youth Complex. After that defeat,Wesson lost the coin-toss that determined the location of Game 3but the Wessonites still got to celebrate and took home thedistrict trophy.

Both teams advance to the DYB State Tournament at Hattiesburg,starting July 17. Wesson will be seeded No. 1 and Summit No. 2 outof District Six.

“It was a great game for our team,” said Wesson boss Jerry Hood.”Congratulations to our boys for being two-time champs in the 10sand 12s.

“Summit has a good team and we wish them luck in the statetournament.”

On the mound, Hood scattered 5 Summit hits, the big one afifth-inning, 2-run homer by losing pitcher Levi Wishart. Hoodstruck out 7 batters and walked 6.”

Wishart fanned 4 batters and walked 3 in the loss. He wasreplaced by Dakota Gressett (3 Ks, 0 BB) in the fifth.

Wesson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jase Alexanderdouble and singled in the victory. Farrod Green doubled and MaxDaughdrill singled as Wesson added single runs in the second andthird innings.

“We didn’t capitalize when we had a chance,” said Summit headcoach Sambo Roberts. “Their pitcher (Hood) did a good job. We knewit would be a battle to the end.

“Congratulations to Wesson and we will see them inHattiesburg.”

Summit, plagued by 3 errors, got singles from Wishart, PatrickRoberts, Brooks Ingle and Squirrel Brown.
