Services for Carey Worth Philpott, of Alabama, were 2 p.m.Saturday, June 20, at Fairfax First Baptist Church with burial withmilitary honors in the Fairfax Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Garnettofficiated. Johnson Brown Service Funeral Home in Valley, Ala., wasin charge of arrangements.
Mr. Philpott, 80, died June 17, 2009, at his residence ofnatural causes. He was born on Aug. 20, 1928, to Thomas Walker andAnnie Mae Philpott.
He graduated from Handley High School and then later receivedthree degrees in education from Auburn University, serving as aneducator for 28 years. Mr. Philpott served as principal of FairfaxElementary School for 20 years. Mr. Philpott playedsemiprofessional baseball for the Valley Rebels and theFlorida/Alabama League. He served in the U.S. Army during theKorean War. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a memberof the Fairfax First Baptist Church. Mr. Philpot was cared for byLonzie Tremble, Bernadine Manning and Fay Spears.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Gordonand Eugene; and his former wife, Kathleen Clark Philpott.
Survivors are his wife, Nellene Russell Philpott; his children,Larry, Amelia, both of Valley, and Gary; his stepchildren, StevenRussell and Lori Salyer and husband, Ricky, all of Brookhaven; asister and brother-in-law, Rudene and Hubert Childs, of Meridian;his seven grandchildren; his four step-grandchildren; his twogreat-grandchildren; and his four step-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Philpott’s nameto either Fairfax First Baptist’s piano fund or the FairfaxElementary School.
