Calvin Kees scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge in overtimeFriday night to give the host West Lincoln Bears a 12-6 win overthe Williams-Sullivan Yellow Jackets in an MHSAA Classic Game atPerry Miller Field. A lingering thunderstorm forced a 2-hour delayin the kickoff that began at 9:30 p.m.

The victory ended a 26-game losing streak for the Bears andstarted a happy celebration. The Yellow Jackets lost their 38thestraight game, the longest current string in Mississippi.

At the end of regulation, the teams were deadlocked at6-all.

“We had a great effort from everyone,” said West Lincolnsecond-year head coach Chris Calcote. “Our defense played a goodgame. This was the second time in school history that they shut outthe opposing team from scoring.

“My guys played hard tonight. We were also short handed, havingsome of our players out with injuries but they will be backsoon.

“We still have room for improvement,” added Calcote. “We need tocut out the turnovers. Overall, it was good to get the win. My guysdeserved it.”

West Lincoln tied the game 6-all at the 7:49 mark in the secondquarter on a 26-yard run by senior running back Tray Moore. The2-point conversion run failed.

Williams-Sullivan took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter whenDerreginald Williams returned a pass interception 35 yards for thetouchdown. The try for 2 points failed at the 6:25 mark.

“We played a hard-fought game, but we had some bad calls at theend of the game which West Lincoln took advantage of,” said WS headcoach Rodney Roundtree. “Overall, I was disappointed with the refs’call at the end when I called a timeout and was granted it. Thenthe refs said we didn’t have a timeout and they didn’t allow enoughtime for my guys to get back and get set up for the play.”

In overtime, West Lincoln had moved to the 1-yard line in 2plays. That’s when the Jackets called a timeout. According to MHSAAovetime rules, each team is allowed 1 timeout. The Jackets alreadyhad called 1 timeout.

“We are a good team and we played well tonight,” addedRoundtree. “Our defense did a good job tonight but our offensestruggled.”

Offensively, West Lincoln was led by Kees with 11 rushes for 60yards. Tray Moore carried 8 times for 52 yards. Deon Moore rushed 4times for 16 yards.

The WS running game was sparked by Donivan Hogsett with 12carries for 58 yards. Derreginald Williams followed with 7 carriesfor 75 yards.

Defensively, Garrett Rushing led the Bears with 11 tackles.Making 8 stops was Grant Rushing. Jonathan Smith and Calvin Keescollected 7 stops apiece.

The Yellow Jackets got 8 tackles from Jaramie Griffen, followedby O. Simmons with 7.
