Hornets sting Cathedral

NATCHEZ – After upsetting the Franklin County Bulldogs 12-0 aweek ago in their season opener, the Loyd Star Hornets weren’tabout to have a letdown Friday night on the road.

Hornet senior running back Tradareous Wilson rushed the football9 times for 125 yards and scored 2 touchdowns to power Loyd Star ina 27-0 shutout over the Cathedral Green Wave in D’EvereauxStadium.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 2-0 on the season and hostRichland at William E. “Sambo” Smith Field this Friday night.Richland fell to Wesson 42-13.

“We are happy to be 2-0,” said Loyd Star head coach Ryan Ross.”We are pleased with the players’ effort. We jumped up real quick14-0.

“Cathedral stiffened up in the second quarter, throwingdifferent looks at us. We made the adjustments at halftime and wecame back and our players executed. I was proud of that.

“I was worried about us being flat,” continued Ross. “Weexecuted our plan. We got back focused after the second quarter. Wecontinued to play hard.”

Wilson scored touchdowns on runs of 26 and 32-yards in the firstquarter. Dillon Smith kicked 2 of 4 extra points and Loyd Star tooka 14-0 lead.

Third-quarter action saw junior running back Marquis Hayes breakloose for a 21-yard touchdown and push Loyd Star’s lead to20-0.

In the final frame, Hornet senior quarterback Joseph Shelbyconnected with Keldrick Smith on an 11-yard pass play for the finalTD of the game as Loyd Star took a 27-0 lead and secured theshutout.

The Hornet running game got added support from Hayes with 11carries for 56 yards.

In the air, Shelby went 2-of-5 for 19 yards. Smith had 1 catchfor 11 yards. DeAndre Butler had 1 catch for 8.

Defensively, David Fields and Sims powered Loyd Star with 11tackles apiece. C. J. Duckworth made 8 stops. T.J. Floyd collected6 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
