Co-Lin racing to get ready for Southwest

WESSON – In a race to get ready for Thursday night’s game, theCo-Lin Wolfpack is making the best of a short workweek in preparingfor the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears. The SouthDivision game kicks off at 7 p.m. in Stone Stadium.

Archrivals Co-Lin and Southwest have identical records of 1-2overall and 0-1 in the South Division. Last week both teams losttheir South openers as Southwest fell 33-16 Thursday night to GulfCoast at Summit and Co-Lin fell 28-24 Saturday night to JonesCounty at Ellisville.

Co-Lin head coach Glenn Davis said his team is at a disadvantagebecause of playing Saturday night. It gives his Wolves less time toheal their wounds after the disappointing loss at Jones County. TheWolves fumbled away a late scoring opportunity at the Jones 16-yardline.

“It’s a real short week for us,” said Davis. “We try to get ourplayers as well as they can be, try to get them ready.”

Davis said Co-Lin’s offense needs more time to develop theproper blocking scheme. “Offensively, it’s a bigger deal. Ourblockers have to make sure they know who’s got who.”

Southwest boasts 3 outstanding linebackers, led by Mychal Bailey(5-11, 193, soph.) of LaGrange, Ga.

In Southwest’s defensive line, Demerius Darius (6-5, 265, soph.)works at tackle and wears jersey No. 9. Darius is from Birmingham,Ala.

“Their secondary is strong and they play hard,” said Davis.

Asked about Southwest’s offense, Davis said, “They have twoquarterbacks who run the ball a lot.”

Stanley Jennings (6-3, 225, soph.) from Marietta Ga., and RobbyRobinson (6-0, 203, soph.), from Flowood (Northwest Rankin), callthe signals.

Wide receiver LeMario Barnes (6-2, 175, fresh.), from MountOlive, also got Davis’ attention.

The Bears are under the direction of Charles Anthony who is inhis fourth year at the helm. Anthony has compiled a 12-17 overallworksheet. His Bears finished 2-6, 2-4 last year.

Davis said injuries to offensive and defensive line haveaffected Co-Lin on both sides of the line of scrimmage. “We hadsome defensive linemen who were banged up and didn’t play. Thoseinjuries have affected us.”

Co-Lin had several scoring opportunities against Jones Countyderailed by miscues. “We have to quit making mistakes when we havea chance to score,” said Davis. “We need to be sound in all phasesof the game.”

Running back Tywon Lee rushed 20 times for 107 yards and atouchdown versus Jones County. Delmon Robinson had 6 catches for 66yards. Carlton Ollie caught 4 passes for 57 yards. Mike Shaw had 3catches for 42 yards and a TD.

Freshman quarterback Percy Turner completed 21 of 37 passes for236 yards and 2 TDs. Michael Berry had 3 catches for 33 yards and aTD.

Tyler Fitzgerald punted 4 times for a 37-yard averaged, kicked a46-yafrd field goal and was 3-for-3 on extra points.

“We weren’t pleased with our defense,” said Davis. “We felt likeif we scored 24 points, we should have won.”

Davis said cornerback Ryan Williams played well against JonesCounty. He made 6 tackles in the game.

Wolf Tails: In last year’s meeting at Summit, Co-Lin shut outSouthwest 28-0 as quarterback Micah Davis passed for 247 yards and2 touchdowns. Davis threw TD strikes of 77 yards to Jason Bruce and18 yards to Haki Reed. Courtney Hall returned an interception 42yards for a fourth-quarter TD and Phillip Harris ran 1 yard for ascore.
