Lady Panthers win region title

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers captured the Region 6-5A slowpitchsoftball title Tuesday evening with a 6-0 shutout of the McCombLady Tigers at the Lady Panther Softball Complex. In the secondgame last night, the North Pike Lady Jaguars would spoil SeniorNight with an 11-1 win over the Lady Panthers in 6 innings.
Ole Brook closes out the regular season Thursday at WarrenCentral. The Lady Panthers will host a best-of -three series in theopening round of the South State 5A playoffs against Region 8-5Arunner-up Long Beach. Game times will be announced later.
North Pike, the Region 7-4A champion, hosts Crystal Springs fora Senior Night single game at 4:30 p.m. today, and closes out theregular season Thursday at Bogue Chitto.
Brookhaven 6, McComb 0
The Panthers (8-15, 2-0) defeated McComb 5-4 last Thursday atMcComb. They are the only teams competing in slowpitch softball inRegion 6-5A
“I was really proud of the effort we put forward tonight,” saidLady Panther head coach Lisa Covington. “It’s good to be at home tothe open the playoffs.”
Brookhaven took care of business in the first 3 innings, scoringa pair of runs in each frame.
In the first, Brooke Hosick and Stevie Wright would cross homeplay. Hosick scored on a McComb fielding error and Wright scored ona Christen Benson double.
The Lady Panthers got a single from Shareeka Hill in the second.With 1 out, Dana Herring reached on a fielder’s choice. Hill scoredon an error, with Herring scoring on a Desiree Benson base hit.
The third frame, saw Madeline DeLaughter reach on a single.Benson reached on an error. Erica Bridwell reached on a fielder’schoice to load the bases. Hill’s base hit played DeLaughter andBenson.
Hosick (3 K, 0 BB) got the win, while Casey Brumfield sufferedthe loss. She lost her no-hit bid in the seventh on singles byDanielle Farnum and Lauren Mabile.
Hill singled twice for Ole Brook.
North Pike 11, Brookhaven 1
The Lady Jaguars (20-3) pounded out 12 hits in the game. NorthPike, coached by Sonya Wallace got 2 singles and a double fromBreanna McKenzie. Lauren Wells had 2 singles and a triple. AlanaHopkins singled twice. Charnessia Gordon, Kelsey Lord, BriannaBrister and Savannah Johnston also collected base hits.
“We really hit the ball tonight,” said Wallace.
Wallace’s ballclub used a 6-run third and a 5-run sixth to evokethe 10-run rule.
The Lady Panthers (8-16) got singles from Christen Benson,Rashana Stewart and Herring. Herring scored Ole Brook’s lone run inthe third off a sacrifice fly by Wright.
