Lady Cobras drain Lake

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras swept the Lake Lady Hornets 3-2and 8-4 Tuesday night in the first round of the best of threeseries in the Class 2A State slowpitch softball playoffs.

Wesson (14-4) travels to Stringer Monday for the second round ofthe playoffs. The starting time was undecided at press time.Stringer (16-3) whipped Richton 20-0 and 4-3 last night. Lake wascoached by Luke Cotman.

The Class 2A playoff games between Enterprise and Union havebeen moved to Thursday due to heavy rains Monday and Tuesday. Thefirst game begins at 5 p.m. at Union.

“It was good to get the wins,” said first-year Wesson head coachJackie Stowe following the games. “Anytime you can win in theplayoffs, it’s good.”

Stowe said she was pleased with winning pitcher Marley McCardle(0K, 1BB) who worked both games. “Marley calmed down and pitchedwell.”

Wesson 3, Lake 2

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Cobras in thefirst inning. Wesson scored 1 run in the fourth and 1 in the fifthto tie the game at 2-all.

In the bottom of the eighth, Maura Smith singled with 1 out.Christina Fink advanced to first on a Hornet error. Macie McQuagesingled to load the bases. Maddy Rials ripped a single to scoreSmith for the game-winning run.

Powering Wesson with 2 singles each were Rials, Shauntay Walkerand McQuage. Fink, Smith and Marley McCardle singled.

For Lake, Kelsey Shaw led with a double. Laura Taylor, TraceyWolfe, Abigail Calhoun and Hannah Clay hit safely.

The losing pitcher in the series was Kelsey Shaw.

Wesson 8, Lake 4

The Cobras exploded for 3 runs in the top of the first inningfor a 3-0 lead over the Hornets. Wesson pushed its lead to 4-0 inthe top of the fourth but Lake came back with 4 runs to tie thegame at 4-all.

In the fifth, Fink singled, then advanced to second and third,before stealing home plate to score the go-head run and give Wessona 5-4 lead.

Seventh-inning action saw the Cobras add 3 runs for insuranceand take an 8-4 lead on a 3-RBI single from Leah Greer.

Fink powered the Wesson batters with 4 singles. Maddy Rialstripled. Doubling was Walker. Mack Rials, Kimmie Kolpek, Smith,McQuage and McCardle hit safely.

For Lake, Ashton Parker and Taylor led with a pair of singlesapiece. Amanda Williamson, LeAnna Boyle, Donald, Wolf, Clay andCalhoun singled.
