Smiths direct Wesson’s win

The Wesson Cobras and Madison St. Joe Bruins used completelydifferent objectives offensively to try and outwit each other butthe end result saw the Cobras pound the football to victory with asloppy 33-17 Friday night victory on a muddy field in StoneStadium.

The Cobras (8-1) got a monstrous performance on senior nightfrom senior tailback Jeromy Smith who blasted the Bruin defense for235 yards on 39 carries and 3 touchdowns. Another senior,cornerback Dre’ Smith, countered the offensive Smith with twogiant, drive-killing interceptions to lead the defense on a nightthat saw the Bruins attempt 37 passes.

“I am so glad we pulled this one out,” stated Jeromy Smith. “Werelaxed in practice, but it worked out in the end and I am happyfor my teammates.”

The Cobras got on the board in quick fashion with Jeromy Smithpounding it in from 2 yards out only a minute and 10 seconds intothe contest. The Cobras took the 6-0 lead after Jeromy Smith sethis own touchdown up after returning the opening kickoff back 73yards.

The Bruins (2-7) fired right back when talented wideout StephenToler took the ball 11 yards to paydirt. The Chase Blossman PATgave the Bruins a 7-6 lead briefly.

Three minutes later in the first, the Cobras would watchwingback Deon Pendleton scamper 4 yards on the toss play to put theCobras up 12-7. Dre’ Smith took the same toss to the goal for the2-point conversion run at the 3:07 mark of the contest to extendthe lead to 14-7.

After Jeromy Smith scored his second TD on a 28-yard run to givethe Cobras a 20-7 lead, the Bruins answered with a 28-yard Blossmanfield goal to cut the lead to 20-10.

The Cobras added another score 25 seconds before half whenPendleton hit the edge again and scored from 20 yards out. AustinGraham missed his third PAT of the first half and Wesson went tointermission leading 26-10.

The second half saw the Bruins and Cobras add one touchdown eachin the third quarter. Jeromy Smith scored from 41 yards out for theBlue. Then Bruins quarterback Patton Willowby hit Toler on a 9-yardscoring strike to end the scoring at 33-17.

“We played good in spurts tonight but I am glad this one is overwith,” explained Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton. “I think our kidswill be ready Friday night to see where we stack up againstPuckett.”

Willowby had an outstanding performance for the Bruins, passingfor 327 yards on 21 completions. Toler had 6 receptions for 134yards for St. Joseph. The problem was that the Bruins could notstop the bulldozing they took from the Cobras. In addition toJeromy Smith’s explosive night, Dre’ Smith also hit the centurymark with 101 yards on 5 carries.

Defensively, the Cobras were led by defensive backs Dre’ Smithand Pendleton who had 11 tackles each. Defensive tackle Derek Lyleshad 9 stops to add to the effort. Dre’ Smith’s two picks were hugefor the winning momentum.

The Cobras travel to Puckett for a showdown with the newheavyweight of the district Friday at 7 p.m.
