Beautiful weather for Norwood Cup action

Blue skies and sunshine greeted Saturday’s golfers for theopening day of the Norwood Cup competition at the BrookhavenCountry Club. After morning and afternoon action among 44 players,the Brookhaven Country Club held a narrow margin of 22 to 21.5 overthe Wolf Hollow Golf Club team.

Action resumes today at noon as the scene moves to Wolf Hollowin Wesson. It will be match play format and more close competitionis expected. In Sunday’s match, a total of 44 points are up forgrabs.

In a Saturday ceremony outside the clubhouse after lunch, EdNorwood expressed his gratitude and appreciation for therecognition. “Golf is a lifetime sport,” said the 86-year-old. “Iappreciate this honor very much.”

Norwood said he had known many of the team members when theywere youngsters just getting started. “I remember when some of youwould bring a small bag with about five clubs to the first tee. Youwould play all day.”

Norwood was accompanied by his wife, Bess, and family members asthey posed for pictures near the club patio deck.

Norwood joined the BCC in 1948. He has volunteered countlesshours of service at the BCC and Wolf Hollow over the years.

Saturday’s morning format was a 9-hole alternate shot, followedby an 18-hole, 4-ball in the afternoon at the Brookhaven CountryClub. Wolf Hollow won the alternate shot 9-2 and the BCC won the4-ball competition 20.5-12.5.
