WESSON – Sophomore DeMorris Summers provided some late-gameheroics with a go-ahead jumper off the glass and freshman teammateMarcus Hooten netted a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds left toplay, lifting the Co-Lin Wolfpack to a 65-62 Monday night win overthe Mississippi Delta Trojans in sweat-soaked Mullen Gymnasium.Hooten finished with a game-high 22 points as Co-Lin raised itsrecord to 3-1 on the season in its first home game.

Summers, a 6-2 guard from Jackson (Provine) cashed in a stealwith short bank shot off the glass, giving Co-Lin a 63-62 lead with10 seconds left to play. Earlier, Summers sank a short jumper off asteal for a 57-56 Co-Lin advantage, followed by a pair of freethrows.

Summers, who finished with 15 points, recalled his go-aheadjumper. “I knew they would try to get it to No. 23 (Falando Jones).”Dwayne Brown had kept the ball from going out of bounds andflipped it back. Then I stole it and took it to the hoop.”

The Trojans (1-2) had regained the lead at 62-61 on a jumper byDeMario Calvin and 22 seconds left on the clock. Theblack-uniformed visitors had forged a 6-point, 56-50 lead with 5minutes left on a driving layup by Jarvis Moore.

Summers had signed with Tougaloo College after a stellar careerat Provine. He dropped out at the semester and regained hiseligibility at Co-Lin last spring.

“We can be a great team but we need better chemistry,” saidSummers. “We need to communicate better on the floor.”

Co-Lin coach Dennis Sims saw his team outrebounded 43-23 but theWolves caused 22 Trojan turnovers. They also got double digitscoring from Earl Warren with 16 points and Anthony Evans with10.

“Earl Warren was a big difference for us, making those layups,”said Sims. “He gave us some offense.”

Warren, a 6-3 freshman from Carville, La., finished with 16points.

“The big play was when DeMorris hit a layup and cut it (lead) toone. We are a young team and very inexperienced.”

Brown, a 6-8 sophomore from St. Rose, La., was the onlyreturning starter for Co-Lin this season. He was held scoreless byDelta’s superior inside strength.

The Trojans, coached by Derrick Fears, got 14 points and 11rebounds from Lonnie Cottrell, a 6-5 sophomore post from Belzoni.Falando Jones, a 6-4 sophomore from Greenwood, added 13 points.
