Hornets, Bobcats in road tests

The Loyd Star Hornets and the Bogue Chitto Bobcats see actionFriday night in the MHSAA State Football Playoffs. Loyd Star (10-1)travels to Bassfield (10-2) in the second round of the Class 2Aplayoffs. Bogue Chitto (5-6) enters the first round of the Class 1Aplayoffs on the road at Nanih Waiya (10-1).
In last week’s games, Loyd Star eliminated Enterprise-Clarke41-27 and Bassfield shut out Pelahatchie 40-0 on WilloughbyField.
Bassfield is on a 10-game win streak and has outscored theiropponents 160-12 in the last 4 games.
Loyd Star head coach Ryan Ross talked about Bassfield’s YellowJackets.
“Bassfield is fast and physical,” said Ross. “Without a doubt,they win with overall team speed. They have several good runningbacks who can fly. They are so talented everywhere. They do whatthey do and they do it well. They do throw the ball a lot. They runout of the Wing -T and slot.
“We are going to have our A game,” explained Ross. “On defense,they will play multiple fronts on us to stop our option game.
” We have to play a well-executed ball game on both sides of theball and special teams for four quarters. We are going to have toget some breaks to go our way. We are going to try and control thefootball and not give up the big plays.”
Starting on the Hornet offense against Bassfield Friday isJoseph Shelby at quarterback, Tradareous Wilson and Marquis Sims atrunning back. The wide outs are Adrian Newton and MarquisHayes.
Working on the line are T.J. Floyd and David Fields at tightend, Trey Reid and Ken Britt at tackle, Joseph Fredenburg and ClintScott at guard and Cody Teekle at center. Dein Fly is the firstsubstitute.
The Loyd Star defense includes Cody Lanham, LaPatrick Smith andAnthony Thompson are up front. T.J. Floyd, Fields and TravisSorrels are at linebacker; Fred Clark and McKinley Hamilton are atcornerback. Sims is at rover. Newton is the free safety. Hayesplays tiger. Korey Allen is the kicker.
Bogue Chitto held off Dexter 24-23 last Friday to qualify as theNo. 4 seed out of Region 4-1A. The Bobcats are coached by GarethSartin. Nanih Waiya stomped South Leake 43-6 last week.
Sartin said Nanih Waiya is a physically bigger football teamthan Bogue Chitto.
“Nanih Waiya has a very good team,” stated Sartin. “They areextremely big up front. They’re a physical football team. They havethe advantage over us on the offensive and defensive lines. Theirfirst goal is to line up and run over you. We will counter act thatwith our speed and quickess.”
“We need to play good football,” added Sartin. “When we haveshown up to play, we have done real well. We have to limit ourturnovers and play them with some intensity andaggressiveness.”
Starting for the Bogue Chitto offense are Tyler Saucier at splitend, James Blackwell at flanker, Robert Bonds at left tackle, ShaunWallace at left guard, Tevin Tobias at center, J.B. Blackwell atright guard, Shane Lewis at right tackle, Adrianne Holmes-Mingo attight end, Javier Gee at quarterback, Cole Laird at fullback andByron Kersee at tailback.
The Bobcat defense is powered by Colton McClendon and Kersee atcornerback, Saucier and Carl Green at safety. Laird, Wallace andKevin Brothern at linebacker, Tobias and Emanuel Magee at defensiveend and J.B. Blackwell and Jermaine Blackwell at tackle.
In the win over Dexter, Bogue Chitto was led by Byron Kerseewith 17 carries for 153 yards and a touchdown. Laird followed with11 rushes for 104 yards and a TD. Finishing with 56 yards on 6carries was Carl Green. Garrett Wallace kicked a 28-yard fieldgoal.
The Bobcat defense got 13 tackles from Tevin Tobias. KevinBrothern made 10 stops.
